New Yaris

you dont know...

The 3 cylinder jobbie was for the low overall cost of the Aygo, and does it have the torque to actually be any good in the Yaris, which presumably is going to be bigger and heavier than the outgoing model..

I wouldnt be surprised if they stuck to the exisiting 4-pot version...

I thought the low weight of the Aygo engine would still make it a contender for the new Yaris . . .

I've heard rumours that it will be used, but like Ian says I can't see it's really a viable option? Surely it would make the Yaris more sluggish than a slug on a cold day?? Maybe I'm underestimating it.

I honestly dont know...

But from my opinion - it was developed as part of the 'low cost of goods' approach to the Aygo - a lightweight car, lop a cylinder off keep the price and economy down...

The Yaris is going to have more weight to pull around, and i'd be surprised if a 996cc 3-pot could do the job...

Im not saying they wont, just i would expect them to stick to the 4-pot to keep a reasonable amount of torque...

Be interesting to see, surely that's going to make the 1.0 lose its edge, i mean the current 4-pot is better than most 1.0's but its still not brill. I can't see the 3-pot being great, especially as the new Yaris looks a bit hefty!!

remeber the corsas with the 1.0 12valve 3 pots :P

even grannies were complaining with the lack of power and it died a serious death

Just found this - don't know how reliable it is but it claims 1.3 and oil burner carried over - 1.0 replaced with Aygo engine -

http://www.japanesecarfans.com/news.cfm/ne...g/toyota/1.html

Hi folks,

It's confirmed on www.toyota-europe.com if you go to the All-New Yaris site, then click on Driving. Not so good news really... but at least it's only on the 1.0

well according to the broshure i got in the post the other day the new yaris does get the aygo unit - but the performance figures actually match the 1sz-fe even beat them in some cases - so it should give the same power as my scp-10, but i'd feel happier with the 1.3 in a heavier car like the new yaris

Yes it's the Aygo 1KR-FE powerplant (if that's the right word  ) in the new 1 litre Yaris. God knows what it will be like going up hills as the Aygo isn't too great at doing that apparently.

New Yaris

998cc, 69hp. 0-62mph (100km/h) in 15.7sec. Top Speed 93mph (150km/h)

Old (!) P2 Yaris

998cc, 65hp. 0-62mph (100km/h) in 13.6sec. Top Speed 96mph (150km/h)

So, a little more power but the extra weight puts paid to that.

Atleast torque been improved to get the boat moving....by 3NM! :P

Old P2 Yaris:

998cc 90NM

New MKII 3 cylinder:

998cc 93NM

Cmon toyota you gona have to do better than that!

Old P2 Weighs (guessing kerb weight as these of parkers and doesnt say)

880kg

New MKII 3 cylinder weighs:

980-1030kg

Who ate all the pies?!?! Tbh i dont think they should have even bothered with the 1litre this time round! if you want the small economical car thats stil quite nippy you buy the Aygo (talking about from yota's range obv!) And if you want a battleship you buy the new MKII yaris :D :P no but seriously the 1.3 doesnt look that much better so you would deffo get the diesel unit if you got one (until Tsport comes out obv!)

It will come out with the 3 pots yes... :S I don't know if any of you heard them, but they seem like those power generators or water pumps from Honda, or even a vaccum cleaner  yesterday i heard one, and... it just creeped me out!! I think I wouldn't trade my P2 Yari for that, unless it was the 1.4 D4D :P

on another note i cant believe people are concidering the 'performance' levels of these engines

surely in something like this its purely to make you move with less petrol used as possible...

;)

Yeah i see your point jaxx but performance doesnt always have to be a 500bhp turbo'd car :P These cars barely even get you moving is the point :P The P1 was quite good performance wise (for its class) so its not that stupid. Also this is all relative to its class rather than the wider world! :P They deffo aint beasts but they were nippy but now lacking the nippyness :P

when looking at a small engine performance is actually more important than you'd think, take my village for example the only way in or out of it is by pulling onto/off the a19 so making a start on a slight hill on the inside of a curve you kinda want the power to make you pull up to 60 - if not you end up with some tw@ in a fiesta or an artic parked in your glovebox :(

oh and btw alj - the p1 1.0 litre has 67 hp :P

Yes, I was just about to mention hills!

Having driven both my previous 1.0litre and current 1.3 along the same Welsh mountain roads, I can certainly attest that even a little more power can make a significant difference.

Around town, I don't notice much difference but when my Yaris and I go 'out to play' in the countryside, I really appreciate not struggling up the hills.

Oh and yes, Toyota's site reckons 65PS (I missed that unit, sorry) so that converts to 64.11 hp!

You should have settled for 65

The main differences are up the top (pinned), not to mention the P2 1.3 being a whole new engine!
