Obese Paitents To Be Refused Operations.

Obese people are to be denied some surgical procedures in a bid to cut costs in the NHS.

Three Suffolk primary care trusts have ruled patients with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 will not get operations like hip and knee replacements.

A person of average weight would have an BMI of between 18.5 and 24.9.

More and more, the NHS is refusing to treat the people that pay for it... First smoking, now overweight...

Fair enough, we have a responsiblity to look after our bodies, but we pay for the NHS, how can they refuse to treat us!

Same reason that we have speed cameras when no-one wants them.

The government do whatever they want to do and say screw the public <_<

I resent it when people bang on about smokers being a drain on the NHS. With the huge taxes that are slapped on a deck, I think we more than pay for it. Ok I'm not talking donor organs here as it's our choice to :censor: them up by smoking at the end of the day, but other treatments shouldn't be denied. Everyone knows smoking is bad for you... it's a killer after all, but also a licensed one so that the big cats can scrape off the top.

As for obese people being refused treatment - it's laughable. Imagine if they try really hard, loose the weight for the op. What happens then? Are they still denied treatment because they were once over weight?? Crazy.

what do they call obese?? I consider myself a bit chunky

It's based upon the person's Body Mass Index, which is calculated from your height & weight. So this particular place is denying treatment if the person is more than 30 points over his/her ideal BMI.

This might help: Calculate your BMI

a BMI over 30 is clincally obese steve- i highly doubt your obese - but to check - divide you weight in kg/ by your height (in metres) squared

yeah, i used to feel the same - smokers pretty much pay for the NHS (relative tax income), and yet they would refuse to treat you if you smoked...

its laughable really...

I`m overweight too Steve, 29.38. I`d have to lose 3 stone to be healthy. FFS. If i lost 3 stone i`d be anorexic. Load of old tosh if you ask me.

*Edited

Just spotted this bit.

IMPORTANT: Please note that BMI is not as accurate if you are an athlete or very muscled (muscle weighs more than fat), as it can push you into a higher BMI category despite having a healthy level of body fat.

So all i have to do is say i`m an athlete...... (Armchair)

Its an obscene idea and where do we stop?

Let's refuse to treat someone who injures themselves doing a little DIY. How about you don't get treated if you fall off a mountain whilst climbing? Don't even think about motor racing, hang gliding, bungee jumping, white water rafting. All far too dangerous and any harm you do to yourselves would be self inflicted.

What's that? You hurt yourself carrying out your elderly neighbour's rubbish?

Well it's your own fault. We're not treating you.

Ludicrous.

Oh and Steve, don't say you're fat or overweight...

say you're undertall.

It's a load of rubbish! I'm classed as obese and you can see everyone of my ribs!

Just to illustrate the point, Lawrence Dalalio is also obese

If they tried to refuse me anything i'd go menthal!!!

If you feel strongly about publicly funded medicine, go private and pay for what you use.

The point about the NHS is that we all pay to treat the sickest people. Socialism at work.

How would you feel about paying a flat fee for motor insurance whether you crashed once a decade or once a week?

Paul.

The reason for the BMI range of 18-25 indicating being healthy is that for an average untrained or only slightly sporty person that is the amount of mass you can reasonably expect a healthy heart to support.

Note it doesn't matter whether that weight is mainly fat or mainly muscle. Muscle loads the heart even more than fatty tissue.

However, if you have got to the stage where you are muscular, in all probability you will have either accidentally or deliberately trained the heart to cope with the extra load.

If you are too fat, you probably have not exercised enough for your heart to be able to cope with the extra load.

There are exceptions ... sumo wrestlers are supposed to be relatively fit :D

Heart disease is a major killer, which is why doctors worry about your weight.

Paul.

Not quite the same is it. Comparing a car to a human life. Cars far more important.

On a serious note. The NHS was originally started so that every person in the UK could have the same level of health care. But subsequent governments have sucseeded in reducing it to a beurocratic jungle. Far too many chiefs and not enough indians. Perhaps the answer would be to run it as a business, run by businessmen. But to make it non profit making. (Which it is anyway) That way you wouldn`t end up with shareholders reaping the rewards.

Who knows where it will end
