Rattling Rear Parcel Shelf

Hi guys,

I've got a 99/V Avensis, and have got a very rattly rear parcel shelf. I've tried to locate where it's coming from but NO luck!

I've taken the boot trim off to see if anything was loose there, tightened the little black stoppers. Had someone else drive the car, while I'm in the back trying to find the noise!

It's absolutely driving me crazy... :ffs:

Anyone had the same problem or suggest solutions?

Many Thanks,

Purvesh

Doesn’t it just! This is not going to help much as I can’t find the B***** source either. I’ve taken the parcel shelf out, secured the metal luggage loops & removed the jack, but have not had anybody in the boot while driving yet (would that be legal?) But I’m still working on it.

I have same problem with 2002 Avensis hatch. Rattle seems to be from tailgate but there is no way of adjusting the catch.

Haa... i've been in the boot with it closed (in an industrial estate) no noise from in there...

The thing I can't understand is, that I've tried everything, yet the rattle whilst driving is soo prominant. Once I find the location, I'l definately be able to very the sound!!

you mean the boot catch? I thought if the boot was closed that would be secure onto the chassis?

Mine used to do it to. What I did was put some extra little soft rubber pieces along the edge of the parcel shelf, the noise comes from when the shelf bounces on and off of the hard ledge that it sits in on the left and right. Once these were in place all was fine!

I've seen quite a few going round with that sticky draft excluder tape stuck onto the edges of the ledge too but that doesnt look very good although probably is just as effective at stopping the noise.

In a post on here a while back people were having a similar problem with the hatch.

Opinion seemed to be that as long as the catch is tight the only adjustment is to give the catch a smack with a light hamer, One bang at a time BTW,

It do's work , it did on my Avensis,

The catch needs adjusting so that tailgate is pulled down hard onto the rubber stoppers.

I cured mine by sticking a couple of drawer/door stoppers (as used in self-assembly furniture) on top of the rubber stoppers.

Not the drop-down rear back seats rattling on their retaining hooks?

I had this with an Audi once-ended up putting a small strip of the soft side of velcro round the metal hoop that the seat back latched onto.

I'll investigate this in my Avensis-there is a noise coming from the back somewhere!

FIXED IT

It was the tail gate.

Placed short length of draft excluder on each of the rubber pads on the body (hatchback) which match up to the ones on the tail gate, and, joy, silent running.!!!!

This was after checking out the rear seat catches, rear shelf, luggage loops, jack etc etc.

:) Aha now I see.. do you mean the 2 little round ones on the boot - which come down on the trim either side of the catch. And the 2 on either side of the boot?

Isn't draft excluder tape a bit thin?

can you super glue some rubber onto the stoppers to build it up ???

So does this mean you have effectively increased the material between the hatch lid rubber stops? Would this not widen the gap around the seal and let in more road noise?

Just curious as I could have the same rattle!

I think the material in place is like 1mm thick, and is in place to stop the friction (hence noise). I don't think this will increase the gap.. ;)

My solution was to use a short length of foam excluder, the type with one self adhesive side and place it on the rubber stop in the “gutter” area of the boot (hatch). Closing the tailgate flattened it down & there appears to be no discernable increase in the seal area. I suppose correct scientific method would require me to remove the foam & see if the rattle returned. Maybe, but the rattle has gone & it has been there since I bought the car 10 months ago. This may not be a permanent solution & the foam may need to be replaced from time to time, but right now I have a quiet car :-))

Yes it will and it will leak water in,

Yes it will and it will leak water in,

IMO it won't. We are talking about stopping the friction of the stoppers on either side of the boot (in the gutter area). Putting tape here WILL NOT increase the gap of the rubber boot liner seal. But at the end of the day, it's your choice.

Dave, your a genius  your right it worked, no more squeaks. Before I put the tape down I had a look at the rubber blocks and you could see on the edges, where it was rubbing and it had gone all shiny.

After 5 years of owning the car, it feels weird without the noise in the back (not that I want it back :D ) What a difference, feels like a new car to me

Like you said, I may need to find something more durable, but for now I'm a happy chappy!!!

Thanks again for your help and suggestions folks.. B)
