Landcruiser Gx - No Power

Hello from Kenya.

I have a 97 Landcruiser (1HZ engine) which has for the last 11 months been smoking heavily, and using up oil. There is lack of power & very slow acceleration when starting from standstill. Once moving the car gets to a max of 100kph and when I get to a hill or slope, need to change down to a lower gear, and normally second or first to climb!

Have done the following :

- The injector pump & nozzles have been calibrated a number of times

- The cylinder head has been cured (decorked),

- The whole engine has been redone by Toyota Tanzania in Arusha,

- The flywheel was replaced, and

- The clutch & pressure plates have also been replaced

I have spent about $6000.00 to date with no success!

Can anyone help ?

Thanks Tiku

Hi Tiku. I have just had those things done to my 1HZ and it has run beautifully for the 1st 1500klms.No oil usage no smoke and it will easily exceed 130klms.

It will accellerate up a steep hill in 4th gear and stay cool.

Was the engine worse before the rebuild?

The injector nozzles cant be repaired, they have a teflon coating and are replaced cheaply with new tips.

The pumps on these wear out quick, usually before 300000 klms which is early compared to other rotary pumps. Typically the pump head, piston and sometimes the outside casing needs to be replaced

I think the only thing to do is a compression test to see if the rebuild was actually done. I think it should get 3600kpa or over 600psi

Also have the oil pressure checked which should be 50 psi at 2500 rpm, mine was 75 psi the day I started it.

The cyl heads are cheap and usually replaced in Australia.

I had my pump rebuilt separately to the engine and it worked great 1st time

Thanks for the tips. The engine performance is worse since the rebuild. Will do as per your tips and let you know as soon as these are done. Cheers
