If the fault clears itself after so many starts of the car, the engine warning lamp will go out of it's own accord.

If it doesn't go out, then there is something it doesn't like! You can reset it yourself by disconnecting your Battery or pulling the EFI fuse for about half an hour. Being as the light is staying on though, it will probably come back on after you've driven the car a few times.

The ECU units are quite good at coping with problems and have backup running procedures. It doesn't mean that your car is running correctly though, so the fault needs to be looked at in due course.

I agree.

Depending on the fault the ECU could be running in some sort of back-up mode. Whilst no initial serious problems it could be over-fueling for example which will reduce fuel economy and cause problems as the mileage increases

  • 2 weeks later...

Well

I have an Avensis X reg estate auto 2.0 CDX vvt-i 70000 miles

I had the engine management indicator on several time, Toyota did reset it. I got fed up with that as I also started to have a quite high petrol consumption 21mpg instead of 30. I never had problem with oil at all.

I booked a visit 2 days ago wih a Toyota dealer ( I had again the engine management on). They only wanted to reset the ECU but I insisted to have this thing fixed.

Bad news :

- They do not really know for sure but it seems maybe it is the head gasket or injectors.......bill around £2000 and 5 days in the garage. I said no.. thank you very much I prefer to get rid of it and buying something else. 70000 miles it is too much? My wife does only 7000miles per year and drives at 90mph max....

What is wrong with Avensis? Sorry by the tone but I am quite upset. Spending £7500 thinking it would be alright and after one year the engine is blown....great...

I miss our old Audi 80...300000miles without any problem

Hi there thdt98!

I've sent you a PM about this one. But if you wish to post it up on here so others can see i'd apreciate it. It's better if others can see what is being suggested so they can agree or disagree.
