a user has half the information to fill a form in, the data then goes into the table and fills half the columns. can the user go back to that entry at a later date and fill in the rest of the details through the form?

the 2nd set of details will need to be in the correct row to match the info there already.

is this possible and how?

cheers

Jamie

I don't see why not. it's only a database after all, and what's the use of a database if you can't update the information in it?

If no-one else can help out, give me a shout next week and I'll reinstall windows and see what I can figure out for you.

It's been a good few years since I've played with Access, although I recall it being fairly straight forward ( most of the time )

I did an access project for my a level..got 98 out of 100 for it. So here's my shot (not that ive used access in 2 years  )

Just make the extra columns that you nee in the tables, then go into the form that you've created, include the extra fields that need to be filled in, just make sure that you have set them so they can be left blank... and i think that should work..but i may have misunderstood what you're trying to do

been a few years since i did this at college. but if i remember right there should be some scroll buttons at the bottom of each for which allow you to go through each entry which is in the table. this means u should be able to update it as well

lol yeah we were all shown how to use it and never needed it :P

Thats becuase more companies are going for bespoke or specialist software, with database manipulation and rights as they want it..

in sort, access is !Removed! useless :P

have to slightly disagree there Matt, Access isn't useless. it's a generic, fully featured database with help files !

Plenty of people are trained using it to gain knowledge of databases and data manipulation.

Bespoke software is tailored to the end user, but as a general piece of software Access is good.

yes, many people are taught it, but when they go in a real job, they rarelly ever use the access skills they learn!!

I disagree, they use the skills they learned in Access, they just don't apply them in Access!

I'd have to disagree, access is utterly useless for anything other than home or personal use.

its file based, slow, useless for anything that requires more than one concurrent user, and with a SQL syntax thats as convoluted as chinese algebra.

I would recommend Postgres SQL or MySQL over access, if Oracle and SQL Server are beyond your budget.

To answer Jay's question, I say either hire someone who knows what they are doing to do a proper job of it for you (in a technology that they assess as the most appopriate), or get by on excel spreadsheets or such
