hi everyone,

my gf just bought a starlet sportif ( R reg).

its nice and suits her but shes already moaning about the lack of power steering

so i'm on here asking whether it is possible to actually 'add' power steering to a non power steering model?

I know where i can source parts but wanted to know if it was actually possible. I guess the same goes for the central locking too :P

At a rough guess, YES.

You'd need a power steering pump, belt and probably a different pulley on the end of the crank to accomodate and drive it. Fluid reservoir and all the other bits too. In theory all you'd need to do is get all the bits, bolt them on and connect it all up. In practice it's probably a little less straight forward.

Pretty much anything is doable with cars, it's usually a case of whether it's practical/financially viable or not !

the steering rack is different too. - probably easier and cheaper to sell it and buy one that has power steering or inflate your tyres to 35 psi

why inflate tyres to 35psi? wont it be dangerous in the winter weather to do that as there will be less surface contact?

Posted

it will make ur steering lighter, really depends how she drives mate, if she's not booting it then you should be ok, starlets come with 135-13 (the skiniest tyres out there) tyres anyway so unless you have these fitted I wouldnt worry about it too much, what size tyres do you have on their at the mo?

atm she has 145/80 13R on.

might look at getting some alloys for her later.

hmm pretty skinny anyway then, best not to blow them upto 35 psi, putting alloys with wider tyres is only going to make the steering heavier. It shouldnt be that heavy on them tyres??? Or is it just cos shes a girl! :P

You will need the following..

Steering rack from Starlet GT Turbo or Glanza (I have one spare)

Power steering pump inc pulley and mounts

Reservoir and pipework

Crank pulley

Inlet manifold (possibly)

I can help with all this stuff.
