St165 Q & Issues..

Heya,

Im in need of an alternator & intend to hit the scrapyards soon, but in id of improving my chances, was wondering how standard the alternator is..

If i could steal 1 from a mr2 or non turbo/non gen4 celica?

general stuff..

ive been the very smitten owner of a gen 4 gt4 for nearly two months..

the last two months have been filled with issues (tho cant really complain as i only paid £500)

My main problem seems to be some-where in the ignition/fueling system.. when i first got the car.. acceleration was awful & far from smooth.. the engine would cut out if you tried to accelerate (& also under heavy breaking) & would rarely see 3/4000 revs

This improved considerably on removal of an evil dump-valve =P

but its still poorly.. still frequently cuts out.. tho now it seems random.. acceleration actually happens now.. engine sounds perfect at 6000+ tho does stutter & hesitate until then (tho more-so at 1-3k)

Plugs are new, Dist cap & arm are far from great but ok.. air/fuel ratio perfect, Turbo's in pristine condition.. tho only generating 0.5 bar.

& mpg is at an optimistic 15/17

any ideas?

Welcome to TOC. :D

The alternator is not peculiar to the GT4 so you`ll probably get away with using a N/A celica or MR2 one. Other possibilities would be a Carina or even the larger engined corollas. Take a note of the alternator number with you, or even the old one to compare.

As for the rough running i`d be inclined firstly to get the dizzy cap and rotor arm renewed as well as plug leads. The GT4 generates an awful lot of heat and plug leads will deteriorate quicker than normal. In that respect you should check ALL the vacuum hoses and air intake pipes for cracks or general wear.
