Celica 6 Gt (st202) Cambelt

Chaps and Chappesses,

Im about to take my celly over to Scotland for a long weekend (err, not just me and the car obviously ;) ) but its overdue a cambelt replacement.

I'm one of these sensible types that likes to sort things before doing a 1200 mile round trip lol, so how much should I be expecting to pay?

I didnt want to go to Toyota for it (£££) and a mechanic will do it but does anyone have any ideas as to the part numbers of the bits I'll need (and whether like Vauxhalls they have tensioner issues).

I assume it's a squeeze your arm down the side jobby rather than lift the lump out?

Cheers!!

Gareth

It is a bit tight to work on but pretty straightforward. You`d do well to get a genuine Toyota belt. Not sure how much a belt is but it won`t be prohibitive.

To do the belt will take a couple of hours. (The crankshaft pulley can be a b**ch to get off) Check the tensioner and the water pump thoroughly before it`s reassembled. . It`ll save having to do it all again.

If your not doing it yourself budget for about 3 hours labour in total plus parts.

Cheers people... not as bad as I thought - under 100 quid to make sure nothing breaks is a bargain... did you get the tensioners done at that price?

Spot on peops, thanks very much!

I didn't get the tensioner I don't think. I remember asking about it because my tensioner went on my Ford Escort when I had that and he said something about ford ones being crappy little plastic things wheras the toyota ones are proper ones and don't need changing each time??

Not sure if it was true, but he is trustworthy and it would have meant more money for him to replace it

if they run freely and dont seem dry dont bother is what i was just told by a celica specialist

called for a st205 belt job , he quoted me £180 for cam belt ,power steering belt and alternator belt.

plus upto £70 extra if he has to change all pulleys and the tensioner.

just remembered I had another belt done at the same time, think he just called it an Aux belt, it was in with the £80 but he said it was no extra labour as they had to take the belt off anyway

Ah awesome, I'll check out the tensioner then in that case, saves a lot of money. The Vauxhalls that I owned before all had the plastic stuff as per the escort mentioned, so they were always going wrong.

So im looking for a new Auxillary belt + cam belt. Spot on. The fan belt I'll do myself lol, thats seen better days :)

Thanks again everyone!

the aux belt is what you call the fan belt. we dont have fan belts nowadays like we had when i were a lad.also gone are the tv ads when the lady hitched up her skirt to reveal stockings to use as a fan belt.very appealing when ur 14 :lol:

I've been quoted £130 to £150 near me (newbury). Do wish I could find cheaper, with the service (and tyres soon) on top of that, I'm gonna be v. down on cash. :(

The £150 quote is the garage leeky recommended to me, seemed to know his stuff about my car specifically, as he suggested the air con/alternator belt at the same time. I forgot to ask if he did a TOC discount. Probably the one I'll go for as I'd feel the car is in good hands.

the local garage round here is £80 for ST or GT

I live in Sussex - been quoted £260 for cambelt change for GT. Anyone know where I could get it cheaper?

I would reccomend that you only fit a Toyota belt. When I got mine the tensioner pully and spring came with the belt kit. I also renewed the water pump and other belts. The Toyota cam belt kit was £38 and the water pump was £26 from a motor factors.

Do my own work so dont have to worry about the labour cost.

You can pop up to Loughborough and I'll get it done for £100 if you buy the parts.
