Vvt-i Oil Consumption

I've read many posts about oil consumption on the VVT-i engine - very surprising, as I've always experienced little or no consumption with other Toyotas I've had.

I've a 2001 1.4 VVT-i (facelifted old model) and it doesn't use 1 drop of oil (45K on clock) - any one reckon I should prepare myself for problems in the next 20K?.

It has a 1 yr warranty and maybe I should consider extending this?

There was also a mention of sulphur content in petrol that may contribute to the problem - is Redex a solution? - I thought this stuff cleaned your engine nicely - but too nicely as it can remove the protective carbon film around the piston rings etc.

I'd better keep an eye on the oil level....as soon as it starts moving, maybe I'll have to part company and go back to Mazda's or VW's.

I have heard that it only effected some engines made from 2000 - 2002, I think.

A friend of mine had a Skoda Fabia vRS (with a VW diesel engine) he had problems with oil consumption.

Think its mainly the 1.8 thats known for oil consumption...

If yours has been fine until now, i think it'll be fine for a long while

From what I've read on these boards, there was a period when faulty lower engine blocks were made (possibly a bit after yours), and they do have a tendency to leak oil. When they do, however, I've heard that Toyota seem to be pretty good about paying for it to be fixed themselves.

give toyota a ring and refer to this site and give them your engine block number you can ask if it is one of the KNOWN faulty blocks

also ask your dealer and get them to monitor the oil used ???

get both to put it in writing and post back here with the info what was your build date ?? ;)

not your reg date ???
