look for ecu error codes , it will tell you which one it is.E1 AND TC with pin removed, codes are 31,32,35,36.any mr.t will tell you which 1 is broken.

31 - Problem in right front wheel speed sensor circuit.

32 — Problem in left front wheel speed sensor circuit.

35 — Open in left front or right rear wheel speed sensor (WSS) circuit.

36-Open in right front or left rear wheel speed sensor (WSS) circuit.

Really?

im getting error 42 which is a speed sensor error.

I called my toyota main dealer and they said the first thing would be to change the speed sensors/abs sensors on the wheels.

Ahhh i get what ya mean now

So i connected TE1 and E1 to get the error code, and i connect E1 and TC to get a more specific error code.

Cool.

I'll try that when i get home

ABS Fault codes are flashed by the ABS warning light - not the check engine light. I expect the ST205 will be the same as this:

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=39928

Code 42 on the engine CEL is speed sensor error. Depending on where the speed sensor signal comes from (I don't know) it could indicate different things:

1) Sensor from gearbox (pretty unlikely as your speedo would be affected too).

2) Output from ABS computer into main ECU. Either indicates a fault with the ABS system (but your ABS light would be on) OR the electrical connection between the two control units is faulty. Snatching at straws here, but if it does work this way, cutting this wire would effectively be a way around the 180 KPH Jap speed limiter. <_<

Does your ABS light come on at all? (it should illuminate for 5 seconds when you turn on the ignition). I fit doesn't then someone has removed the bulb to cover up the ABS Fault.

e1 and tc is purely for the abs, remember to take out the silver pin.

ABS is fine, light goes out as per normal but the speed sensor is built into the abs sensor hence i need a new one.

I'll do the e1 and tc pin check tonight and find out which sensor i need to change

Thanks peeps, i never knew that you could locate the sensor using the diagnostics port. You learn something new every day

The ABS sensor IS the speed sensor AFAIK, they are not two separate sensors. So I'm not sure how you can have a speed sensor fault without an ABS fault (unless the aforementioned wire has been cut).

the speed sensor is in the gearbox lee.

Well the ABS light isnt coming on or disconnected. And the ABS does work so there isnt anything wrong there.

The engine light hasnt always come on. I drove about 200 miles before it started to come on. So that rules out the wire being cut as it hasnt always done it.

I think one of the sensors has just given up the ghost, i hear its a common problem on the st205.

EXTRACT TAKEN FROM GT4OCC

if the speedo is working fine , then the speed sensor is FINE.

they must be crazzy to tell what they told you

also not able to read the error codes , when the engine warning lights comes up how would anyone tell what is the cause ?

generally speaking it is still possible for the ecu to generate error code 42 ( as corrected by ag0w) .

which is speed sensor related even if the sensor is working .......this happens if the connection between the ecu and the sensor is lost .

the connection is taken from the speedo connector ( the one that connects to the speedo clock, having fed the clock with signal from the sensor , this is how its on the gt 4)

somtimes when people re-fit the connector to the back of the clock , left edge of the connector is not seated in the clok housing , and the transmission of the sensor to the ecu is broke, as it is the 2nd wire from the left hand side of the middle connecotr that feeds the ECU with the speed of the car, either to trigger code 42, or on the jap cars aslo to cut the speed of the car at 180 k km.

But and that is a big but this gararrge seems to be a collections of jokers if u ask me, and please tell them I said so

in any case a garrage should not just specualte they should be able to take the !Removed! sensor and test

although i will say it again as you said your speedo is working ALLLLLLLL the TIMEEEEEEEE , the speed sensor has to be !Removed! ok.

the speed sensor is in the gearbox lee.

Really? hummm oh well, i'll do the error checks and if nothing comes back from the abs sensors then i'll assume it is the sensor in the gearbox.

Not a problem, gives me an excuse to fit a Fidanza flywheel and padel clutch if the gearbox needs to come out

Good point, the speedo was changed for one of the paper replacements that only goes up to 120mph <_<

Its highly likely that this connector could be the cause.

First i'll do the sensor check to make sure that all ok and then if all comes back fine i will take the speedo out and check the cables. Thanks for your help dude

Checked car over, ABS is fault free so it looks like all 4 sensors on the wheels are fine.

I took off the speedo and reseated the connectors. Will have to wait and see now if the light comes back
