Range Computer

Okay, so we've discussed the range thingy on the display before and I've written myself about resetting it but how about this?

So I've done a fair bit of driving over the weekend and I also filled up the tank. On the way back home there was a drive along the motorway but today it's been back to stop-start town driving.

Tonight, on the way home, I glanced at the display... Range 87 miles....

What! I looked at the fuel bars, all lit up, full tank and my car is going to do 83 miles with all that petrol.

After parking up the car, I reset the average mpg and mph displays and then the range. 'Reset OK' it reliably informed me and switched to... Range 323 miles.

Phew!

Anyone else experienced a fright like this or got any ideas as to what spooked it?

Ah ..... this is a P2 thing :P :D !

I guess it works by predicting how many miles you can drive on your tank of petrol, so it must compare how much is in your tank and your current driving mpg.

You must have been driving like a bad boy ....... or stop/start at traffic lights, queues etc!

So what it's trying to say is at current conditions you would only get another 87 miles out of it/her/him etc!

The Range function really does tell a pack of lies, doesn't it? :D

Who me? Never!

Anyway, it wouldn't account for a drop to around a 10mpg estimate and it certainly didn't say that on the average mpg display (about 36mpg I think).

Just a bit!

Mine doesnt do it that bad Al.... but I'll fill up and it'll say like 272 miles and then will suddenly jump to 330 whilst I'm driving along....

I've never reset anything in the cars life though.....

No, never had a fright like that - but instead of using the range I reset the Trip A on the odometer each time of filling up and use then to judge when to get petrol. I do remember once I left here to go to BP and the range said 10 miles left - BP is like 3 miles from here so I thought that would be fine..bear in mind the bottom bar of the fuel tank was flashing..got half a mile away and it was on 0!!!

But when you think about it -

ie you have driven 100 miles on the motorway @ 45mpg and then you drive in the city stop start for the last 10 miles. In those last 10 miles your mpg would be 25mpg but because you have driven 100 miles @ 44mpg the average mpg would drop by a small value to 42mpg as its an average over the 110 miles.

I don't think the range computer would take the average mpg because it is an average so far, and is not the current mpg which is what you would want as how is the computer supossed to know that your be driving another 100 miles @44mpg. So it takes the current mpg and does a little calculation and gives you your result!

:D

Oh I'm with you there mate. As you said yourself, it drops by a small value, not to a quarter of what it was. Also, the av mpg value was ok and bore no resemblance to the range figure I was getting. That's what was so weird. Still, nice to know I can sort it easily enough if it does it again.

As far as the av mpg figure relating to the range. I think it calculates on what distance you will get if you carry on travelling at a similar mpg as you now have.

Can someone tell me how to reset the trip computer, i tried to do it a while ago and couldn't figure it out.

hold the trip button,

the trip computer is rubbish. bunch of A-holes at toyota couldnt make it work properly. and i like needles showing me how much i got left anyway. for example. half tank sometimes only gets me 60 miles. wtf is that all about?

im sorry but it gave you a fright?

jeeeezzzz

:P

Too right! At that rate it would cost about a quid for every 4 miles! :o

Nah, knew something was up with it and didn't fancy yet another trip to Mr T.

I'm known by name there. That can't be good. ;)

Normally 80mph in 3rd gear :D :P !

Ouch! lol Any speed above 60 is usually 5th gear for me unless major acceleration is needed then I go to 4th!

Now that IS worrying!!!

i try to keep every gear changed at 4-5k revs. thats ot seriously pushing it. most of the time at 4k. and its not how many revs you put through it..... its how much the throttle is opened air/fuel ratio?

Mine did this once after refilling-it even told me not to run the car as it reached Range=0. Seems OK now
