i love debates! :D (not that you can tell!) :P

So here goes:

people were sticking neons to their cars and stupid spoilers way before fast and furious was made! I think its daft to blame that on a film!

Any culture like this is going to have people that dont know what they are doing! but thats personal taste.

I think it raised the profile of nos - however you look at it, whether thats good or bad i dont know.

and i think its done the jap market some good aswell- like i think bibbs said - more tuning companies - easier access to parts - that can only be a good thing! imo ;)

No, id say it was more like seeing a hugely modified Supra, big wing, flames from the exhaust, graphics, and looking under the bonnet to find an unmodified N/A...

:( I wish to modify the exterior of my car without touching the engine, does that make me a chav max muppet?!! :crybaby:

I hope not...

(mind you, i'm talking factory skirts and no more)

read the quote properly...

It was a comparison to the Mona Lisa...

not saying it was muppetty, i was saying the mona lisa was fantastic, until you get close, and as good as it was to look at, it just lacked substance...

DAMAGED - now everyone wants 'lexus' lights, big 'gt' wings and nawz

now we see loads of top japanese cars plastered with flame decals and shopping lists

(like the little fiat chinq' i saw at school with huge apexi stickers on it  )

imo the first film was good it was actually a little bit cult infact i remember that max power really hated it and said that all the cars were crap, now they bum it to hell

2f2f was alot worse primarily because it accociated the japanese modifying scene with one of my biggest pet hates - the black urban music style - now the makers had created a film aimed purely at the chav

but do i hate the films - no, and when the 3rd one comes out ill go and see it - its a film about cars - but will i come home and fit a full bomex kit with 20kg of worthless mods to my car - no

sorry but hw was it aimed at the 'chavs' , dont even think that damn word was invented when that film came out!

dont think most people would be able to spend £15k on their car as they supposedly did in the first film -( to the supra) - so i doubt it was aimed at anyone with less than a very considerable income

Every morning on my way to work I walk past this black car.. I don't even know what make it is to be honest because my eyes are instantly drawn to the huge 'spoiler' sticking out of the back. It stands up about a foot from the saloon boot in a horrid shade of .. metal. It looks just like pure metal. Unpolished, not shiny, just rubbish. I can't imagine why a person would do that... it just looks yuck.

I don't like cars that have too much done... but at the same time I'm not completely adverse to mods that don't improve performance... Toyota horns are cute ;)

You know, I'm not sure that they did "damage" the scene...

What seems to be happening now it that the cars involved MK1 Mr2s, Supras, etc. are reaching the price point almost all cars pass through where they are no longer "nearly new" and are not yet seen as "classics". In the past the cars in that price brackets were always Fords, Vauxhalls or similar but now that Japanese cars are so much more popular (mainly, in this case, through the surge in popularity of "grey imports" a few years ago) in general there are more for people to choose from...

Maybe the movies made people more aware of what cars were available, but I think that the "F&F-ing" of cars would probably have happened to a greater or lesser extent anyhow.

I agree with you to ....... the yaris is starting to suffer from the same image/labeling problems too!

The films in all honesty wasnt to bad, but I also have seen Knight Rider and Herby and it didn't make me want to go and buy those cars.

Well kinda  !

Again, that's happening to the Yaris as it enters the same price zone as the Corsa and Fiesta which have always been "tinkered" with.

The thing is that it used to be really difficult to import vehicles not sold here, but in the US att the stuff like the Pontiac Firebird (Knightrider), Dodge Charger (Dukes of Hazzard), etc. have been through they stage...

Wise words indeed. I liked the films and as far as I saw it, those cars were (pricewise) well out of my league. Sure it may have meant a few more Pugs, Corsas and Saxos with shopping lists on the side and big spoilers on the roof but that would have happened anyway. More on topic, the question asked was

Has the Fast and the Furious damaged or bettered the Jap Performance Car community/culture?
I'd say that this is probably damaged more by people now being able to buy such cars as they are getting older and the prices are dropping. Maybe you should blame the likes of Toyota instead for not making new equivalent cars anymore?

On Saturday I saw a Skyline in Chester. Beautiful burnt orange flip paint, spoiler, black vinyl graphics and an exhaust note to die for. Yes, it looked like the owner had been inspired by the movies. Damaged? Hell no, let's have more cars like that on the road!

I'm old enough to remember bog standard minis being treated to cheap copies of wide minilites then the owner "forgetting" to add the wheel arches to cover the protruding tyres. Then they'd remove the bumpers leaving that razor blade metal lip showing (all illegal by the way). Instant rally car! On the other hand, there were mark I escorts with wide glass fibre wheel arches (always badly glassed or pop rivetted to the car) while it stood on skinny standard steelies.

It's nothing new. Some people will take a car, modify it and turn it into a thing of power and/or beauty. Those with less taste or cash will ruin it. I don't think you can blame it on one or two movies, more a general cultural thing and people trying to be part of it "on the cheap". At least the demand for the parts, as already mentioned by others, has made them easier and cheaper to obtain.

didnt ruin the rep at all if you ask me! the only good thing about the film was the cars

Some people have embraced the F&F ethos and thrown a lot of money at producing powerful and attractive vehicles a a result so it''s swings and roundabouts in my opinion.

Good idea, having a debate btw.

I think it's a good thing as it's bringing different styles and influences to the fold (that we can all point at and laugh).

(Just a shame there is the chrome/neon tat that comes with it).

Whats that you are saying about neons???:lol: :P

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
