Sunroof Speed Limit?

Today I was on the motorway and I tried to open the sunroof (all the way back, rather than just up). It would not open at any speed above approx 40mph. Is this supposed to happen or does it have anything to do with the roof box I have on the car right now. The roofbox does not touch or obstruct the sunroof in any way, however it must create extra pressure between the sunroof and the box at speed.

Can't remember mine having any problems like that. Having said that though, they aren't known to be the most reliable of sunroofs on the Avensis.

It should work. I had a new sunroof under warranty when I had my Avensis though, to be honest, don't bother, leave it shut and save the risk of it jamming part open or closed at somepoint and use your A/C. A/C uses less fuel than having sunroofs and windows open anyway especially at speed, and in this weather is certainly useful for keeping the windows mist free.

Today the 'one touch' close option on the sun roof stopped working. Since the car is under Toyota warranty I have booked it in (again) to be looked at.

I used to drive a Nissan Primera before swapping to a 1.8 Avensis. In eight years of Nissan ownership I had virtually no problems. However in three months of Toyota ownership I've had the brakes skimmed (problem still not cured), the rear wiper unit replaced and now the sun roof has packed up. Added to this the Toyota dealer who sold me the car did so 2 months before a major service was due and didn't provide a handbook or carry out the touch body work they agreed to.

I am beginning to think I made a mistake by swapping brands. It's still early days and I'll give the car a good year to see if things settle down, but so far I am quite disappointed in Toyota.

Does anyone watch the program 'Mythbusters' on Discovery? They try to disprove or prove myths and urban legends and things that the bloke down the pub say. One of them was which was the most efficient between using a/c or winding down the window. Thier findings were that for the vehicles they tested it was better to have the window down below a certain speed, and then above this certain speed shut it and crank up the air con. Don't know the magical speed though, I was only half watching it.

Mike.

That was exactly how I felt, I used to have a Primera before the Avensis, although to be fair, the new Primera is a Renault Laguna underneath so would probably be worse than the Avensis. I think either stick to Japanese Toyota's, or get a Honda.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well it just got better! over Christmas the alternator belt snapped for no known reason and left me stranded. The car was serviced (big one, £415) just three weeks ago. The RAC chap said the belt looked fine and couldn't understand it. He fitted a new one and within 24 hrs it was squealing on full steering lock, so out came another RAC chap. He tightened and loosened several belts and eventually got rid of it (for now).

Is there a known problem with alternator belts snapping on the Mk 1 Avensis?

So in just three months my 99 18K 1.8GS Avensis has had the brakes skimmed, a new rear wiper unit, the sunroof motor replaced and a new alternator belt. I once owned a Lada that was full of faults, but I have to say that the Avensis is letting me down even more frequently.

Thank goodness I have another 9 months of warranty, let's see if my patience holds out!
