Auto Transmission Selector Light

I have an 02 Auto Avensis, the lamp that indicates the selected gear works intermittently, it's either the bulb or the wiring. My problem is I can't see how to get the bulb out to check it. I have removed the gear legend strip and I can now see the bulb but I'm unable to pull it out. I can see that the bulb holder appears to be a bayonet fit and I have twisted this and the whole fitting then tends to move down with no sign that I can move it up to get at the bulb. Does any one have any ideas on how I can get this bulb out?. I'm sure there is a simple trick but I can't see it.
