Tyres

In october I replaced the front tyres from Continental premium contact to some cheaper nexen 2000.

Since then I have done about 1500 miles.

the tyres are absolute rubbish -heavy rain they are ok and in the dry they are average but any slight dampness becomes a lottery - pulling away the wheels spin, when stopping the ABS cuts in to assist whilst the car skids to a stop and taking corners results in either wheel spin or sliding towards the curb. My driving style has not changed since the conti's and before that p6000's. Even my wife has noticed when she drives the car and she is far from damon hill !!

My question is could I approach the people I got the tyres from and ask for replacements as I feel they are not fit for the purpose or shall I fork out another £115 odd on getting another pair of tyres - no lie that is how concerned I am about staying on the road!

I've never heard of Nexen, however your experiences reminds me of a time I decided to buy a set of Barum tyres for my Nissan Silvia....as you say in the dry ok, but when it was wet I nearly killed myself, I think they make some of these tyres out of really hard industrial plastic, they hardly wear at all but are !Removed! dangerous. I would go change them for Michelin or Dunlop or Yoko's or anything relatively well tried and trusted, when I put Michelin's on my Silvia driving in the wet almost had the same grip as dry. Thats my 1/2pence worth anyway. :)

I would also change them back to Continentals or something else, you dont want tyres with those characteristics, I've always thought its worth paying a lot for the best tyres considering its the only thing keeping you in contact with the road.

I find the same handing with 2 crappy westlake tyres on the rear of the car.. I inherited these when i bought the car 2 mths ago...

Had to replace 2 balding firestone tyres on the front so i'm using Bridgestone turanza ER300s.. much happier in braking wet and dry but on greasy roads my back end is sliding all over the place on corners.. due to the Westlakes...

Cheap tyres are definitely false economy

It's simple. Don't buy cheap tyres. THey are the sinlge most important thing on your car, the only thing keeping you on the road.

The best things to do, if ask the garage what they have in your size, and have a good look at them. put your finger on the tread and then press down hard. If your finger slides straight off and the tyre feels slippery or plasticky, stay well away. However, if they feel rather sticky and rubbery, and leave a black mark on your finger, then they're OK.

And besides, if you liked the tyres you had on before, why change brand? Better the devil you know

except perhaps someone who has an old school 80's toyota going into the showroom and buying a brand new one today

Way i look at it is

would i buy cheap trainer/shoes and expect them to do a good job, both in comfort, looks, design and durbaility

I try and spend over £50 on each tyre minimum
