i know a lot of big turbo boys who cant se ethe point in cooling the turbo down, they rekon the difference it makes isnt worth the petrol u use, they only time my mta eused to let it cool is when the turbo goes transparent

I usually only wait about 5-10secs. By the time you have put the handbrake on and taken off your seatbelt id say your good to turn the engine off.

If you have been 'rallying' then i'd say just drive for 500 yards off boost before you stop :) That way you can just switch off as normal since the engine has time to cool down

as leeky said, just run the last bit of driving gentally, it's better than letting it sit as it will suffer from heat soak and risk doing more damage. mostly because the engine gets cold air thru it which will cool the oil going thru the turbo so cools that down better than letting it idle

so whats the point of a turbo timer then , pure waste of money by the sounds of it eh ? lads

Dont like turbo timers myself, they are of course illegal in this country (not to own or have fitted but to use).

If you drive sensibly for the last few moment of your journey then you dont need one and your reducing wear on your engine :) Plus its one less mod on the insurance ;)

Because its illegal to leave your car in an uncontrolled state.

Your not allowed to leave your car running when you are not there, incase something goes wrong and it goes into gear etc.

It could move and hit anything, or even catch fire or explode and you wouldn't be around to stop it.

Hence using a turbo timer is actually against the law, its common knowledge.

Your right up to a point. It`s still ok to use it provided you don`t leave the car unattended on a public highway or public car park or where the public have legal right of passage or access. I use mine when i get to work in the mornings and when i get home. Any other time it`s just a matter of letting it tick over for half a minute or so. No big deal really. :D

Same thing applies to remote start alarms. Although i really can`t see the point of those anyway.

yes but surely once the steering wheel is locked the car wont be capable of goin anywhere....n i just love the way leeky said 'It could move and hit anything, or even catch fire or explode and you wouldn't be around to stop it.'

mate if it explodes id be happy i wasnt in it!

yeah but some dik wont lock the steering wheel, ENTER mr.chaver sees a gt4 ticking over , = no one init , init  window in and chav drives off for 30 seconds or more - unless the handbrake is inhibited as exhibited by mr.daktari. or he turns 180 degrees and locks the steering wheel which ever comes sooner,

forgive leeky , he's excited he has a new transformer is all.But he has a very valid point

Here's my 2p worth.

It's all about prolonging turbo life. First here's what you trying to avoid.

Just been out in your four driving "Progressively" i.e. on boost turbo get !Removed! hot proven by the old turbo glow we all know, love, and get a little tingle about whenever we see it. Now if you just turn the engine off the turbo is still !Removed! hot and as the oil pump is no longer turning there's no oil flow, the result of which is that the oil in the channels and bearning gets cremated and leaves a nice layer of burnt oil on bearings and oil channels. Now this won't make the slightest difference the first time or the second time, but at some point in the distant future the oil channels will become so restricted that the bearings will seize and the turbo will go pop :ffs: .

This all becomes even more important for turbos with oil float bearing such as our CT turbos.

The trick is to allow the turbo to cool down enough so that the above doesn't happen. Weather you do that by driving off boost for the last minute or so of your journey, or by leaving the engine running once stopped coz you ragged the car to your door is up to you  and of coz the speed restrictions near your house mister officer :D

P.S. the big turbo boys probably don't see the point because they tend to pop their turbo's/engines via other methods first :D

also if hot oil cools in a stationary position it 'carbourises' and leaves blood clot style lumps it the oil lines/pump/bearings

the contiuing motion of allowing the engine oil to cool helps to stop this

all to do with the molecules moving past each other and the fact their lube properties change under extreme heat

i always give mine a minute of idle when i pull up after a hard blat and the journey from the A roads into my village is taken steadly to help shove some air through the engine while in the midst of the extreme part of cooling down

So would it not be better if the oil pump just ran for a minute or so after u turned the engine off, rather than running the whole engine? I'm not sure how much Battery that would drain, or whether its driven directly by the engine.

you blatant liar .. I've seen you MANY times standing in the drive for 5 mins ..

Just get a turbo timer, but it on 3 mins and that it ;)

 With my old cars maybe, but i dont do that anymore. With the amount of heat coming out through the vent in the bonnet the turbo cools down very quickly ;)

Yes that would be the idea situation and I have seen a number of custom turbo convertions which do just that, however the diffference is that these custom ones tend to have a closed oil circuit run from an electric oil pump just for the turbo.

Where as engines that where designed with turbos like ours tend to take the oil supply from the engine where the oil pump is driven by the timing belt.
