GT-FOUR

Howdy guys :(

Well I took the GT Four out today for a run in the snow, figured I'll be ok, 4 wheel drive n' all ... WRONG ! :(

I was at a set of traffic lights, I indicated right, lights went green I set off, turned the wheel accelerated gently, and whoosh, rear end span out on me, must have only been doin 15mph, so I put opposite lock on, not panicing at this stage, and I was saying to myself, ok car, come on, tyres.. grip.. then wtf!!!.. I continued to slide about 25 metres into a wall ! CrUnCh ! :(

Absolutly gobsmaked.. I wasnt bootin it, wasnt showin off, must have hit some ice or somethin and the car just slid onto the oncoming side of the road, up the kerb into a wall, I tell you what, I was lucky there wasnt a lorry comin or any pedestrians walkin by.

2 hrs and £70.50 later and I get the GT Four transported home.

The only exterior damage was the dint to the bodywork next to the wheel, rest is unscathed, and of course the wheel itself.

Basically guys... I have a dilema now and need your advice as to what I do next.

Can anyone tell from these pics whats happened ? I do not know the terminology nor am I familiar with the mechanics of the GT Four, it looks to me like there were 3 tie rods connecting to something ? they have snapped, and also if you look on the pics behind the wheel, theres a bent arc section, could this be a bent wishbone ?

I am currently outta work, so I need to know if this will be a cheap fix, what parts I will need and where I will source them, the recovery man said its not so bad, as it drives fine in reverse and the wheel goes straight therefore no axel damage, but he said not to quote him on that.

Anyway have a look at the pics guys and your 'constructive' input would be much appreciated, if its not repairable, does anyone know of its value ? surly the engine alone is worth a grand ?

Thanks in advance, am off to cry now :(

Damn. That sucks. :( Bodywork should repair ok and it looks as if its just the track control arm and lower suspension arm that need replacing, maybe damaged drive shaft as well.. Might have damaged the locating brackets but they`re easily repaired by a competent body man.

Try TCB for spares CLICKY

I`d stick to a sledge next time

That is so sh*ty

i got my car hit today but by someone else who decided to pull out when a car was present(ME)...pretty much identical damage except my rear wheel escaped damage. thankfully i can claim but it still is sad to see it happen.

hope all goes well...

Good luck mate.

I can speak from similar experience - did an almost exact maneouvre in my old man's Alfa 147 a couple of years back.

I don't wish to be the bearer of bad news, but suspension damage like that is expensive. All the visible damage I had was a bent alloy, but below that was all the suspension/drive shaft that was fractured.

I hope to god yours is better off. I've got my fingers crossed for you.

I've learnt my lesson now..............I don't ever drive in snow unless it can be absolutely avoided!! :(

Cheers mate :)

Well she drives ok in reverse and impact was only about 20mph, but you never know eh, it could be kaput.

I will get the parts I need to fix it, and if she dont drive straight then I'll bang it on eBay spare or repair, its me only option really as cash is seriously limited.

unlucky fella

to be honest it doesnt look THAt bad, believe the setup is similar to the MR2 ie just simple suspension parts, it actually looks like naff all is holding it steady when you see it in complete form

the wheel looks to be hanging on by the strut and drive shaft, all the bars just keep it pointing in the right direction seem to have bit the bullet

id check the shaft, diff, hub and strut for any damage, main point is too look for any bolts or bolt holes that may have been stretched or warped which will end up knocking and banging if you dont rectify them

Unlucky mate, Did the same sort of thing in my car, bennt the hub, shock and both strut bars, cost me over £500 to repair best of luck mate.

Bad luck mate, as everyone has said hopefully only be lower arms that need replacing, but you need to look at everything connected to it to make sure it's ok. Suspension systems are built to take a fair bit of abuse but in the up/down direction hence when you wack it side on they tend to fall to bits.

Hope it doesn't turn out to expensive, and a reminder to all us four drivers that just coz we've got four wheel drive doesn't mean we're imunne to ice and snow, does help though .
