Damage To Gearbox

Dear all,

Can anyone tell me what it will cost me to fix the fiollowing problem with my 1996 Rav4? I travelling back from Bournemouth to Huddersfield when the 5th gear started to act up.. At first it kept slipping out of 5th into nuetral, then it just stopped going into 5th completely. I managed to drive it all the way back in 4th, but now I'm not sure whats the best thing to do... I'm abit skint and this car is already costing me a small fortune and I've only had it 6 weeks so far! Is this a common fault with Rav4's?

Any advice much appreciated.

6 weeks! Take it back to the place you bought it. If they are 'anul' about it, post again.

This really isn't normal for one of these.

Hope you can take it back to where you got it from. This car probably hasn't been treated too well to have this sort of problem. Mines got over 100k on the clock and absolutely trouble free. Very cheap to own really.

Seen a few do this. Its not as big a job as it sounds. The fifth gear & synchro are worn out due to drivers sitting in 5th gear with their hand on the gear stick

5th gear is seperate and can be removed seperatley to any other gears via an end casing on the gear box which means you do not have to remove the box

approx £80 or so in parts and £120 + vat in labour will fix. If yout in Huddersfield i may be able to help ;) as i run the aftersales departments at Huddersfield Toyota

Hiya,

Oh damn, I wish I had seen your reply before I put my car in to a garage a few days ago. They quoted 260 + vat, though they did say that they would match any genuine quote.. Probably too late to say what you could do it for I suppose, unless they haven't started on it yet? I never thought to go to you guys because I've always been under the impression that main dealers are overally expensive.. Very surprised... :( Would you mind if I mentioned to the garage what you could do it for by the way?
