First post help please. I have loked through posts for help on this, however, all seems to be on different models than mine.

Tried last night to remove factory fitted cd, no chance. Thought it would be like all others, slip 2 keys down the sides and out she pops. No, it as other posts say is bolted inside in some way. I have looked at pictures from other posts but my centre console is different. I have a standard size gearstick and the centre console is wood effect which goes from bottom ashtray up and around heater controls, cd player and air vents. How do I go about revoving this to get at fittings holding the sterio in place? Its a 1996 Corolla CDXi. Please help, christmas present waiting to be fitted.

Where abouts is the Cd player?

Is it in the cubbby hole, under the heater controls, or abover the heater controls?

Hi, its above the heater controls. First off you have the 2 heater vents, then the audio unit, then the heater controls. Below that is what seems to be a place for cassettes although its fitted with a cd player. below that is the ashtray. However, I looked today and there seems to be 2 screws under the heater controls as if the section above the cassette storage hole is a separate unit? If its easier I will take a photo and post it.

now to remove the head unit from a 96 rola all you have to do is remove the face panal then use only 1 of the keys, you will find along the top edge of the unit there is a tiny slot about 1 cm long, push the key in that slot and that will then release the catch which is located on the top of the h/unit. after that you will need to remove the heater controle nobs and gentley pull the center consel out, don't pull to hard or you'll pul the hazard and rear window heater wires out. once you have done that you will find the cage is held in by 2 phillips screws, undo them and the cage can be pulled out.

after that it's all easy to put in after market h/unit just push the center consel back in place and slide new cage in, then make sure you push the tabs that secure the cage in position down with a screw driver, you will probebley need a conector block for the wires as toyotas use there own style, connect the toyota end to harness then oppersit end to h/unit. put face pannel on and test it's working.

once working push h/unit back in place untill you hear a click, that means h/unit is secure, hey presto you have just fitted an after market h/unit.

Hi Mike, when you say remove the face panel, do you mean the one behind the pop off front of the cd player, the one held in place by several tiny screws? Also, apart from the 2 screws I found below the heater controls are there any other fittings holding the consel in place? Scared to put to hard incase I have not removed all fittings and break the consel.

when i say the face pannel , i mean the removable facia with the buttons on, once you pull that off the 1cm hole should be visable on the top left hand side, just above the cd slot, push flat key in as far as u can and h/unit should come out in ur hands. don't pull to hard on center consell as wires will come off. there are no more fixings on the consel, just remove the h/unit and the consel will be easy to remove, it won't come all the way off, but u don't need it to. all you need is enough room to get a phillips screw driver in to undo the 2 screws then just push consel back in place.
