Overheating Traumas - Toyota Hiace 1991

Yes, another desperate Hiace Super Custom owner with overheating problems; broke, but still desperate to get my wagon back on the road.

In a nutshell; head blown May 05, replaced with new one, but engine still continues to overheat and loose water. Van has been on and off the road since summer '05 and now cant risk driving it more than a few miles in case I'm towed home (yet again). Spent one and a half grand all told on related problems so far..

I've read the very useful pointers from previous posts on this subject and have decided to replace all the likely faulty elements of the cooling system to reduce the likelihood of a second head blowing (unless the new one has gone already, but I don't think so). Head test with coolant colour marker failed to indicate there were exhaust gases in the coolant. It has a new proper spec Thermostat & new cap.

Bearing in mind that problems on vans with a similar history have been caused by rad leaks and fan malfunction, I've opted to replace those and to also get the water pump done while I'm at it. How important do you guys think, with all your wisdom on this matter, is it to go for absolutely genuine parts, or new rad versus re-cored etc.

I've found a mobile mechanic whose willing to do the job if I get the parts. Nearly had a heart attack at the prices being quoted by the Toyota garage for labour costs alone.

Any advice greatly appreciated. I'm trying to get the parts sorted before going back to work after the Christmas break, but don't want to make any rash quick decisions either. Been cycling everywhere for weeks now, so whats another few weeks til someone reads this and replys...

Cheers,

Sue

If you have covered the pump, thermostat, rad etc all to do with the cooling there should not be a problem, however you MUST have anti-freeze coolant all year round in it as the water here is very harsh for jap motors, usually it's the water pump that fails in most cases.

Hope that helps

Steve AKA Spaceman.

For parts at reasonable prices try Japarts 08450 664422 speak to Steve, very helpful and will have your order next day if in stock.
