Noisy Tappets

Call me thick or a dumb **** or what ever you like but I have neglected my ST183 and not checked the oil in it. When I went out in it the other day the tappets started singing me a right old tune and when I checked the oil there was none on the dip stick (not me the other one).

I stuck oil in until it was at the correct level and turned it over. The tune of the tappets has almost gone but there is still a little rattle there when you rev the car.

My mate has told me that this should go once the oil is built back up in the tappets as they are hydraulic and to use the car as normal as this could take up to 3 days to rectify.

I’m not saying my mate knows nothing as he is a good mechanic, but I just wanted some advice from Celica tech’s for reassurance… is he correct or should I bite the bullet and get the car in for a good looking over?

Cheers in advance.

No, he's wrong (partly at least). Your engine does not have hydraulic lifters, but solid cam followers which are adjusted by adding shims. The noise might go away with time, as the oil gets into every little corner of the valvetrain. It could be that one of the cam bearings has picked up though. :crybaby:

Bugger… I will take it for a small easy drive later then and see if this makes any difference. Hopefully the oil will get all around the drive train? I have only done 2 miles since my mistake so maybe not enough yet be fully lubed.

If not I will book it in for surgery…

Had it into the garage yesterday and it turns out to be the crank shells which are causing the noise. My mech says it will be cheaper to put in a new donkey so if anyone knows anyone who has a 3SGE (think the letters are in the correct order he he) pref from an import with low ish miles then please let me know..

There are a couple of 3SGE engines on eBay but you dont have any history with them.. and with them already being taken out you dont get to hear them until you have wasted a day fitting it..

I am hoping some kind soul on here will come up trumps with one.. :D Cash waiting if that helps lol

  • 3 years later...

I own a 2001 Toyota MR2. The tappets are noisy as hell. Put it in for a service and it's come back the same with no explanation as to why they're still noisy. Any help would be VERY VERY much appreciated as i want to get this sorted for the summer. Dont want to be driving around in the summer, with the roof down and the tappets banging out like a drum set. It doesnt seem to happen at low rev's.

The 1zz-fe is a very tappy engine. As long as it isnt using oil and you cant hear it at 30/40mph i wouldnt worry about it.
