Gen6 Alarm

Hi all,

I believe the alarm on my '97 ST is the Toyota one, rather than the 3rd party one.

The alarm fob is failing gradually - it's gone from working first time most of the time to now taking - on average - at least a minute's worth of pressing from all angles with varying amounts of pressure.

I've replaced the Battery, taken it to bits... I think it's just on the way out, and I'll order a replacement today. In the meantime... if I just lock it with the key and don't use the alarm fob at all, I presume that won't arm the alarm. Is that right? It's just that I leave the house at an ungodly hour and don't want to wake the neighbours!

TIA

Using the key should be OK, you should also be able to press the lock button twice (if it works!)

Cheers Sotal. Having just spoken to the local dealer, it seems that I'm in danger of getting some good service from Toyota (gasp!). They didn't go straight for the "that'll cost yer... new one of these... then we've got to code it in..." option; the guy I spoke to explained that it could just be the Battery as apparently you can get into a situation where there's enough dust inside the fob to maintain a permanent contact (just as if you were pressing the button all the time) so it's draining the Battery without sending a code. He's offered to spruce it up and see if that helps...

I guess he got what he wanted for Christmas. Unlike me :(

Cheers,

Nick

You could try resyncing the key as well. Stick the key in the ignition and turn till the last position before you start the car then hold both buttons down for 10 seconds.

Might help???

Well, I'm now in the happy position of having a fob that isn't working at all. Lucky for me, the alarm wasn't armed when it failed. I'll try sticking a new Battery in but I'd be interested to know, is it possible to (dis)arm the alarm just using a regular key without any buttons on it? I was wondering if it might be possible to do it by - say - turning the key twice in the door or something like that. I'm anxious not to arm it if I have no way of dis-arming it!

Assuming the worst... let's say the fob is well and truly knackered. It's the only one I have, and Toyota have said they need it to be working in order to code up a new one. If that's the case then there's no fix for the current alarm. Would it be a straight-forward job for a vehicle security guy to remove it and fit me a new one?

TIA

I have that problem every six months or so, it takes a good few presses for it to work. See my other posts on the subject.

I find that when i get this problem now all i have to do is use my other keyfob a few times and then the other one works perfect.
