I own a RAV4 at the moment and am looking to get a second car.

I've managed to persuade the wife that a nice little sports car would be great.

I'm after some figures and advice on MR2 Mk1 v Mk2.

Has anyone got the 0-60 times of both (UK versions preferably not import).

I'm looking to spend a max of £2000.

What are the pros and cons of each model.

Mk1 is 'underpowered' but a focused drivers car.

Mk2 is faster, but more of a 'GT' car than all out sports car...

Take your pick - for £2k you'd get a very nice Mk1, or an average Rev1/2 Mk2.

It really comes down to your preference, they are very different animals, i suggest test driving a couple of each one, and see which you prefer...

Theres also the thing about looks or handling...

the mk2 imo looks better, a baby ferrari, it will turn more heads, theres more mods you can make to them that will actually suit the car.

the mk1, has the old school looks, but won't really get you noticed, but it makes up for it in the handling I reckon.

Saying that the mk2 is a good handling car, and gets even better with subtle mods, wider offset wheels to fill those arches, bushes, strut brace, and then its a very competant car for thrashing around the twistys.

the mk2 NA rev 1/2 has a 0-60 of 7.2 secs, im not sure of the mk1 but I believe it's in the 8's......

Oh yeah, forgot to say, the mk1's rust! ....well rot, and badly at that, although 2k should get you a really good example

With my cash, I always look to get the best I can with my hard eaned! £2k wouldnt when buying a mk2, there will be problems/wont be a minter. But it should get you a pretty much mint example of a mk1 if you look around :D . just my 2p, but i'd go for the mk1

Weve got one of each

i wouldnt say the mk1 is underpowered, with engine in a good state they are extremely quick for a little 1.6 if you ask me. Superb retro looks, handle superb, nice interior for an 80s car and a different range of hardtops, t-bars etc... only thing is alot of them are rotten as people didnt look after them

the mk2 is more of cruiser yet still retains good driveability. Id strongly urge aginst a UK car... this is my first Jap import and the spec level and general maintanance of the car is something godly. again they have t-bar, sunroof and hardtop versions

For 2k your going to get a decent NA spec early car

Pretty obvious what im going to say - i prefer the mk1 - i have to agree also that it isnt underpowered - compared to the mk2 then yes of course it isnt as fast  - depending on whether you get the nezzy uk poor mans mk2 or not.

But for a 16 year old 1.6 mine wipes the floor with quite a lot ;)

Depends what you want out of it - if you want leg room - go for the mk2

The mk1 is very compact - but then again thats what i love about it - the mk2 feels huge when i drive robs now! :!Removed!:

The mk2 does have a more sporty feel to it and certainly turns heads - as does the mk1 , also like said above - it is easier- albeit more expensive- to mod the mk2, as parts are more readily available.

But for the money £2k you will get a superb mk1 - i wouldnt worry about rust because if you want to spend that much on one you can hold out for a mint one ;)

Mine was £1800 and theres no rust anywhere.

This probably hasnt helped at all! Getting good points for both - guess you really wanted us to hate one or the other to make the choice easier - never mind they are both great :hokus-pokus:

I have owned both a MKII and a MKI.

In my opinion for 2k won't get you a decent MKII and the drive will not be as rewarding as the MKI. There is a huge MKI comunity to offer support and spare parts are never a problem.

I also don't find the MKI too underpowered, but if like Rob, you are used to driving something with a great stonking turbo attached to it, you will.

If you are concerned about lack of power and can streatch your budget a bit you should be able to find a decent MKI Supercharger.

I doubt I'll ever get another MKII. As much as I loved her at the time, the MKI is just too much fun B)

id love a mk1 with the late spec supercharger levin lump, with a few hints a tricks added for good measure, with a decent suspension and brake setup, i think it will wipe the floor with a mk2 turbo!

Well I got my rev2 NA for just a shade under 3k.... and she is in exceptional condition... engine is superb and there was minor rusting in the sils(due to it being a UK car and lived through 12 UK winters)..

Apart from that she is a mint rev2 MK2 MR2 :) but... I was lucky... as peeps have been saying above... 2k wont get you a minter... perhaps a more mint rev1 MK2... but even still not as good as what 2k will get you in the MK1 stakes...

MK1s are nice cars... bit too retro for me... but thats all personal taste.. some of the ones I have seen around TOC have been lovely... well maintained etc...

Good luck in your search... but unless you up the budget a little.. i think MK1 might be better if you want a mint car... otherwise you are looking at work involved...

An import is almost definately out of the question... for that kind of money... its not worth it... shame but true... import costs etc on top of the car would more than likely push you over... so perhaps an already imported model would suit better.

the mk2 NA rev 1/2 has a 0-60 of 7.2 secs

That figure is for the 3S-GE engine, be aware the earliest rev1 N/A MK2s had a lower powered (IIRC 118bhp vs 158bhp) 3S-FE engine

mk1 - if you like your 80's decade, it has something about it that few cars in its class have. i would love to own one.
