Cold-start Knocking

Over the last few weeks I've noticed a knocking sound coming from underneath

my 03 2.0 D-4D at start-up. It seems to happen when it's very cold and only lasts

a few minutes. It's fairly quiet and I can't even definitely pin it to the engine. The only way to describe the type of sound is of someone tapping the window with the pads of their fingers.

Anyone got any ideas ?

Looks like you're right. The dealer checked it out and couldn't find anything. Reckoned it might be something to do with the very cold start-up routine, high pressure ... injector .. diesel .. uurrh didn't really understand to be honest. Still, my brakes don't squeak now so it wasn't a complete waste of time.

What about using 1 quarter of Lucas Oil?

I am having the same noise but I am not sure if it is a good idea to use 1 quarter of lucas oil in my corolla 2004 (38k miles)

Is their oil known for helping with cold starts ?

I reckon I'll try not to get too stressed about it - wait until it gets warmer and see if I can still hear it. It's got a little warmer in London the last few days and there's been no sign of the tapping.

I've got manufacturers warranty until September so it shouldn't be a problem.
