Called Garage today and still waiting for diog on fuel pump. They had sent it of on Thursday morning. So looks like I will not get car back till Monday.

While pump is of they are changing the timing belt as this needs to be done at 60k (9k left) as they had to take old one off to get to pump, told them to fit new one.. Cheaper this way...

Will let you know out come of repairs needed.

Ok Garage called today to tell me the news of the autopsy on the RAV4 fuel pump.

Three things wrong inside after carrying out tests...I'm getting the pump re-conditioned as this is cheeper than buying new.... £££ (said if they fit a new one the part is coded to the car so Mr T will have to do this part..Any one know about this. Good idea in principal but a pain if you have to pay Mr T just to code a part to the car)

So all in..

50k service -

New cambelt kit (needs changing at 60k and as they take the old one off to get to the pump anyway)

Removal and re-fitting cost of pump and other bits etc

Fuel pump re-conditioning

Just over £1000 including vat.....Lion share of this is for the pump re-condition...but I knew it would be....

And also a free courtesy car I have been using from them as well, Mr T near me charges £10 day..

Sorry to hear RAV4 is not right again, :( can be expensive letting MR T guess what is wrong :censor: Hope you get it fixed properly this time as it is no fun when it is not wright. Just back from 3 days with caravan, RAV4 pulled like a dream, overtaking lorries no problem, I can now here the turbo whine slightly when accelerating, dont remember hearing it before, it is not a diff or transmission whine I should know that as that is my job. saw new RAV4 yesterday, nice :jawdrop: must get one before warranty runs out on old RAV4 in 3 months time

Went in last Monday... Could not find fault again. Fault light came on as well. Diagnosed said Fuel pump.. car very jerky and has no power some times gradually goes along and then it's as if it frees it self and goes again. :crybaby::crybaby:

Back in on Wed and Thur next week to have a good look at fuel system. Car starts well and tick over is fine just cant accelerate away very fast.... Driving me nuts... as journey home is 40 miles M25 and M11 cant over take anything and some even drive slower than me..... and i have an excuse....

Well mine has now had a new EGR valve fitted as I was told that was the fault, unfortunately its not that, its still jerky at 65mph+ and still looses power, its now started making a hell of a noise first thing in the mornings, almost like the injectors are lacking of fuel. It goes once its warm Its not the valve clearances as they've been checked and adjusted. And a new fuel filter fitted. Like you its driving me nuts. I feel its something to do with the fuel system, someones told me it could be lack of fuel pressure?????? Anyone got any ideas? noted something about a spv valve earlier in this forum, what is it? and is it easy to fit?

Other than that its a great car.

Webbo

Its a valve fitted to the diesel pump, We have replaced 3 now for same problem

Remove pump and send to nearest denso agent for them to replace

Dont know how much its costs because they have always been under warranty with Denso

hi guys been there with scv1 and scv2 2 pumps have been replaced but the problem is still there technical said replace the comm rail so we did still same problem then was told to replace the ecu, problem still there. went on a technical course the other day and asked instucter about the problem. he said could be the throttle body

Well mines in the garage as we speak, I sincerely hope its not a situation like this, otherwise I'll be getting rid of it pretty smartish! I'd have to remortgage to pay for all that knowing what Mr T prices are like :huh:

hmmmm :crybaby::crybaby::crybaby: well that dream went sour on Saturday night....old problem came back with a vengeance. Had to get RAV recovered and loaded onto flatbed and taken home (was in Northampton needed to get to Essex) got home in time for F1 :) RAC where brilliant and efficient..

Turns out that High Pressure Fuel pump is at fault AGAIN.....so waiting for garage to assess this so I know who is to fix it....been round in circles for two days now....O and no one has any courtesy cars available...so had to hire car until Saturday...

When you rely on something so much and when it's no longer there....It's like loosing your right arm...Living out in the sticks and trying to get everywhere is proving difficult...

Wait and see where this goes and how to fix....!Removed! part is not easy to get to either..most of engine has to come out to access it....

Hi there.

We are about to commit to a RAV4 XTR D4-D 55 plate.

Brother in law has a GX D4-D 02 plate with the issues being discussed here, cutting out when there is a demand on the engine.

He has never got to the bottom of it, but still likes the RAV4 for other reasons.

Can anyone tell me if this has been an issue with the older model alone. Has it been rectified in the "newer" models?

Thanks folks

Hi Windy

Welcome to the club.

I am not aware of any problems with later Mk II RAVs. It sounds like your BIL has a problem with the high pressure fuel pump. The pumping elements can be bought off Parts-King.

  • 2 weeks later...

Spoke with BIL and he had already tried the fuel pump.

He decided to buy a used EGR valve (£94 inc P&P, and 30 day warranty).

BINGO! That's what it has been all these years!

He is delighted and asked me to mention it in here so as others with the same issue can consider trying that too.

We picked up our 55 plate XTR yesterday, and took it for a run up through Callander and down by Loch Lomond.

That twisty Loch Lomondside road is a good testing ground.

WE LOVE IT! :D

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and came to this topic as I am having similar problems with mine. Rav 4 VX D-4d 2001

It started about two weeks ago and has been intermitent since yesterday when I had to be towed to my local garage as I could not get home.

Sometimes its worse than others. I can drive it around above 60 no probs one day then the next It won't let me go above 30ish but then gets better and goes away a bit.

So far I have not spent any money and have read all posts regarding this problem. I understand that it could be several things and would like to gather a list of possibilities that I can try in priority to get the problem fixed asap.

It is booked in to have it pluged in to the management system to see if there are any faults first, but I have doubts on this as I have never had any fault lights on the dashboard.

:( :( :(

Please help, Thanks

Results from the management system came up with 'mass air flow circuit'. Anyone else had this diagnostic and replaced it?

Does anyone know where I can get one of these from without having to go to Toyota?

Cheers, Steve

Mmm.

The Mass Airflow Meter is in the air intake. It uses a hot wire to measure the amount of air coming into the engine by how much the wire is subsequently cooled and makes adjustments to the fuel input according to throttle position and numerous other inputs to the ECU.

It is possible to make some checks on the circuit which are outlined here;

http://www.autoshop101.com/

Technical articles/OBDII/34 - Air flow meters

It is also possible to clean them sometimes succesfully which is outlined here on a Fiat but pretty much the same;

http://www.bravo-guide.co.uk/photogal/guidepics/maf/maf.pdf

I don't know where to get one other than from Toyota but kingo will sell you one at a discounted price if cleaning and checking the circuits fail.
