Bearings

Was fitting my christmas present of new drilled and groved disks all round. In stripping the car down I did not like the bearings, so with a quick call to Mr t I was shocked at the following prices

Front bearing £ 68 + VAT

Front bearing seal kit £ 40 + vat (a real bargin two flimsy metal rings with a rubber inner seal)

Rear bearing kit £163 + VAT

Thats £636 to do a set of bearings. Have also noticed that on the inner CV boot a split replacement has bee fitted and of course is leeking. I will need to do the front bearings now the back will have to wait. Frightened to ask how much the CV boot is.

Thought I was going to have a great time painting callipers and cleaning things up and fitting my new breaks, now I am wrestling the bearings out and wondering where I'm going to get the cash.

Anyone know of a cheaper source? The back bearings are the killer. The rear hub looks to be part of the bearing, hence the price.

Get down to your local Motor Factors. You'll be able to get the bearings for a fraction of the Toyota price no problem.

If you want to save even more it's a bit on the tricky side ( at first anyway )

If you know the exact make/type of the bearing then go to your local Bearings/power transmission company ( Yellow Pages ) and they'll do them even cheaper

Most bearings will have the manufacture number and/or size on the edge. If you`re careful when you remove them you`ll be able to quote the number to the supplier. My fronts for the GT4 worked out at £12-ish each. Had to get the seals from MrT though.

Yep, getting my front bearings for £32 for the exact same bearing, but no avoiding the price for the seal kit though. Will look at the references for the rear. WHile I dont like them they are far from trashed and this will allow me to try to get something a bit kinder to the pocket.

Thanks

Got new rear bearings including the hub for £92 each when Mr T was seeking £163 each. Think I got a bargin, and have checked them out they are the right part.

Managed to use an enginee's supplier through work. If I can sort anyone else out let me know.

Great! most pleased indeed
