Help - This Celica Lark Is Getting Expensive

Hi all,

When we bought the GT the previous owner had broken and lost the alarm fob :ffs: I like things like that to work and so a saga has begun.

I finally assertained from Mr T that the alarm was the toyota version TVSS 3 and that he could supply a new fob at an extorsionate rate :censor:

I now have the fob and after an afternoon searching these forums I have about done my nut. I would appear that I should be able to sync the fob by either holding the unlock key for 10secs and then the lock key (this does indeed make the led flash faster) or with the key in the ignition hold both keys for two secs.

Problem is there is not a whisper from the car and I do not know if these methods are correct for a new fob.

The alarm siren is bolted to the strut brace and has a key type thing on the back. This has no indication as to which is on or off and I do not have a key. I cannot find the control box either under the seat or around the shifter. If it is behind the glovebox it is well hidden.

Thing is people keep writing about a 'Dome' fuse on the passenger headlamp. Could someone point me in the direction of this as I have no idea what I am looking at. If I can find this and the control box I may risk disconnecting the Battery to try and reset the alarm.

Alternatively if any one has successfully mapped a new fob and could talk me through it I will gladly buy you a virtual beer (or a real one if you can get over to Newton Abbot.

TIA

Giles

If your having so much hassle with the stock system then maybe you should have a new alarm fitted :) Should only cost around £50

I considered that but it has a Cat1 alarm as standard and I would like it to work. (especially as the insewerance lady assumed it was working when she calculated our premium)

If only the toyota lads weren't so close with there info. They reckoned half an hour labour to pair them. This means five minutes assuming all the bits are there and I cannot afford to pay them.

Problem is I don't yet know where the bits should be, the Key for the siren is not available as a spare and they do not provide instructions with the product they sell you :censor:

So I turn to the one place I know there will be some friendly advice and common sense.

Over to you -

Giles

i would take the fob back to mr t and then spend a decent amount of money ie £2-£300 on a cat 1 system.

pay peanuts get monkeys nicking your car :ffs:

I agree, but didn't he say he couldn't afford to pay Mr T for half an hours labour? So surely £2-300 would be out of the question.......??

sorry he wrote that while i was composing reply :group-cuddles:

Hi all,

Whats all this He business :D Names Giles,

I think I am getting somewhere. There is a buttom on the alarm ECU which starts the remap process. All I need is to find the ECU :ffs: Anyone with a UK '94 GT know where it is?

Also the following may be useful to anyone else trying to get round stock alarm probs.

I would say that it is a good idea to just have a decent alarm fitted to protect your motor. I had a really good Thatcham approved cat 1 alarm and imob with protection throughout... cost £175 supplied and fitted! I think some of these companies also do it on finance. Would be a very small amount per month over 1 year.

Just a suggestion

Good luck

I may yet have to go down that route. Thing it it is a UK car and comes with a CAT1 alarm fitted as standard. I know the model, have bought a Fob and have the instuctions for pairing the fob with the car. (Mr T wanted 30mins labour to do what will be a 5min job. Only thing I haven't found is the alarm ECU and am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction to save me stripping half the interior

Here's hoping

Hi,

Which Remote do you have?? Mine is Figure 2 on the PDF but it says it came out in 1995 - so which do you have??

Both my remotes stopped working properly a couple of months a go. Luckily for me they packed up when I was in the car! ie I got home and couldn't lock the car. So I went in to get the spare set and still couldn't lock it so I had to use the key.

Since then I have managed to get one remote to work, but not the other! The strange thing with it as well is that the remote only used to work from about 2 foot away - now it works from about 20 foot away!

The main control box for the alarm is just behind the gear lever but I don't know if it has a button on to program it. Pull up the trim around the gear lever and you should find the box in that hole. As far as I know you can just adjust the sensitivity there.

The way I got the 1st remote to work was as follows:

Put Key in Ignition and turn to ACC

Hold both buttons down for 10 seconds

But it failed to work with the second remote - even though they boh worked fine before

Well After Reading your docs and doing some more reading on the net it seems that the box I mentioned should be the control unit. So I'm going to go out and have a play - I'll post my findings later, hopefully that will sort it out. If it does I will write some proper instructions up, as there has been sketchy bits about for a while

Just went and checked mine, and although it is the TVSS it looks different to the pictures and to the stuff I found on the net. From what I can tell the Celica has the Standard TVSS the one you got the manual for is the VIP TVSS fitted to the Camry/Land Cruiser

Okay, so far. Yup, the manual is for the truck, however as you can see from the PDF the system is similar throughout the range so it should have some relevance.

The dealer has sold me a Fig 2 although according to their own document I think I need a Fig 1. This could be the getout which allows me to return the fob as I have no box behind the gear lever and have just found a stray plug behind the Glovebox (another fabled location) which looks like it could fit the socket in the manual on the ECU.

Unless I can find the ECU there is no point me shelling out on another fob (PDF says I could use a fig3) as it may be some t**** has removed the Cat1 alarm. Why you would do this without replacing it is a mystery to me. The previous owner said he was given a fob which was broken but didn't say the guts had been ripped out of the system, so maybe there is hope.

Failing all this an after market system will be the next step as if the boss looses this car she will be narked to say the least. At the moment it is parked at night with 2 ton of alarmed Vectra blocking it in :)

Thanks for your continued help and hopefully this thread will be useful to someone

Giles

PS cool rude word catcher - I was careful what I used, but I guess if you lose the T it could be rude :)

the key type lock on the siren is the valet switch. it isolates the alarm so you dont have to leave the fob wen having services done etc. sounds like they guy lost the fob and the has put it into valet mode. you proberly have paired the new fob with your alarm but t wont do anything while in valet mode. you need to turn that switch

Hey, thanks for the new info. I asked about the lock but Mr T had no idea what was on/off. I have returned the fob for now as according to the PDF they gave me a '95 fob for a '94 car and I didn't need it to be left so long they would not take it back. Took the PDF with me as proof I may have the wrong one. You should have seen their faces when I produced their own document they did not even know about :D

Next steps are:

1) Find ECU and ensure powered up

2) assertain whether the valet lock is on and ensure it is off

3) Obtain correct fob

4) Pair

5) Scrap whole lot and buy after market alarm :censor:

Thanks for all your input so far. If anyone has any more usefull info links, please share
