Replacing The Stereo...

Hi folks,

Just looking on Parkers at the review of the Corolla - it appears the trip computer (MPG calculator etc) is built into the stereo. If this is the case, is it possible to replace the stereo and keep the computer part (e.g. take it apart from the guts of the stereo and mount it elsewhere)? Alternatively, is it possible to rig up a sub/amp and an MP3 CD changer to the OEM headunit?

Cheers,

Matt

Hum, thats rather pricey considering it probably won't be that good quality.

I should have posted this question in the main forum, as it applies to all of the newest style Corolla's. Has anyone got an aftermarket head unit in and managed to hang onto the MPG calculator etc?

are you really that bothered about the MPG caculator?

it's not really worth the hassle.

Yeah, definately - i'd want to see how much petrol I was burning sitting in Leeds traffic :S

No seriously, I would like to keep at all costs - I find the calculator/trip computer in my Megane very useful indeed.

the MPG display in the corolla is minimal to say the least.

in fact that's pretty much all it displays.

then Renault's trip computer is much more detailed (i had a Clio)

Ah fair enough - I assumed it was the full trip computer, average speed, MPG etc. If its just the basics, I could probably get by without it.

I totally sympathise!

I just got a new Tsport Corolla just over a month ago and the OEM stereo really isnt up to much.

Was definately looking to change it as I have a pile of stereo equipment from my last motor sitting in the garage gathering dust and damp.

Was hoping someone would know how to keep the MPG computer / display somewhere. It is a bit of a gimic I know but still seems a shame to just chuck it out if I dont need to.

If needs must then needs must, but id much rather have kept it somewhere and fitted good head unit.

I want my cake and be able to eat it :)

Any ideas would be most welcome!

Hi Feenster,

My advice to you would be to find yourself a JL Audio dealer! There is a product on the market called a CleanSweep (See here!) Will enable you to keep the OEM unit with the MPG features. This unit will also give you outputs for connecting amps and also an auxillary input to connect an MP3 or such like.

Regards

Neil

hi guy

g3m xr - wish you could track down that inof you talk of. about a year ago i tried to find a solution to keep mpg info but take out the OEM unit but no joy......

ended up stick a 1DIN unit above the ashtray.

To get better sound from the OEM unit you would need some kind of aux out connection to hook up to an amp/equaliser. Unfortunately all i know of is a speaker->rca converter ( not a true aux out) that costs about £5 in Halfords.

And you can hook up a sony cd mp3 changer to the headuinit with a connects2 aux in adapter (£45). some on eBay - search "toyota aux"

hope this helps
