Yeah, tell me about it!

I've had the car 6 months and have had to replace the stereo and the aerial, and my alarm fob is on the way out, so that'll be another £90 once it's been coded up by the local Toyota dealer. I could do with a new clutch - I'm getting sick of the juddering when I set off in 1st. I also spent £100 on a K&N 57i which, on reflection, wasn't worth it.

Then of course, this being an ST, I'm getting through enough oil to keep OPEC smiling. I feel like I'll have to hang on to this car for a while yet in the hope that this year will be cheaper than last year, and the overall running costs will come down a bit.

Cheers,

Tarby

The Alloy/Tyre could happen to any car.

The clutch and brakes are just one of those things with the age of the car.

Rocker Cover Gasket - I think can be done with silicone - so should only cost a couple of quid.

All in all that's not a bad list for the age of the car, go get a ford or vauxhall of the same age and run that for a year then look at what you need to replace - believe me it will be a lot more!!!

@Tarby777 - Are you still going through oil?? Mine drops right off during winter - I'm hardly using any at the moment. It just seems to be the warmer months that It goes silly!

Oh yes! I had another of those didn't-check-for-a-while-oops-it's-nearly-dry moments again recently. I really must be more regimented about checking.

I've been doing more motorway driving recently, so maybe that's it... she seems to get through more on a sustained run at 70-80 than when crawling round the M60 on the way to work. Without that, maybe my oil consumption would have dropped in the cold weather like yours has. The only good thing *I've* noticed about the cold weather is that the K&N seems to prefer it... it certainly sounds a bit better.

Cheers,

Tarby

Had the same problem, get a can of Tyreweld in there and it'll fix your alloy crack

The rocker cover gasket isn't a big/expensive job, and easy to DIY. Just make sure the surfaces are clean and degreased (use thinners) before reassembly. Also consider replacing the O-ring seal in the dizzy drive - another common source of oil leaks.

Beyond that it might be your headgasket leaking oil - nothing serious, just messy.

Ooh.. You bad. Seriously. A cracked alloy could have potentially fatal consequences.

Think this may be the time of year. I am also moaning about the price of bearings too (about 4 times the price of ford equivilent at £638 for the full set from Mr T) but I really dont mind either doing the work or maintaining the car.

I know there would be issues with the car because of it's age, but as I am overhaul;ing the brakes and renewing disks etc it makes sense to change them now when the car is stripped down.

There is no way I would be letting anyone else work on my babe and that's fine by me but older cars need maintenance and even though Toyota's are by in large bullet proof you still need to face those maintenance bills.

All depends where it is ;) Air was escaping on my Veilside splits through the join of the pieces. Got it check out by a pro, totally safe so a can of tireweld later and the hairline gap was filled

Dont bother with silicone, from my experience it wont last very long and the rocker gasket isnt expensive - no more than £15 - if that, anyway.

Yep do not do the rocker cover with silicone. Get the gasket and then put it on. If your only option is to use silicone on the rocker then just leave it

Do they use silicone as well as the gasket then?? Just wondered because mine looks to have silicone sticking out round the edge!

The 3s-ge uses a rubber gasket, but you still have to use silicon sealer in some of the tight corners around the cam caps.

I could do with a new clutch - I'm getting sick of the juddering when I set off in 1st.

This juddering - do you feel it through the steering column or is it just the whole car kangarooing?

(like when a learner can't use the clutch properly yet)

I'd say it's most like your learner/clutch scenario. It only happens in first, and only if I try to set off on low revs (although not so low as to make it come close to stalling). If I set off with a bit more enthusiasm, it's absolutely fine. Concensus is that it could be oil on the clutch plate. I've lived with it for eight months and I suppose I'll have to get it fixed eventually if only because I might struggle to sell it if it shakes a potential buyer around while they're having a test drive!

First things first, though - my replacement alarm fob is going to be nearly £110 all-in  . I can live with that clutch a while longer...

Cheers,

Tarby
