T-sport Comparison!

First post in T-Sport section.........here's one to confuse you all! ;)

How comes the Celica T-Sport has a quoted 0-60 time of 7.2secs against the Corolla T-Sport which has 8.4secs. Especially when the kerb weight quoted shows the Celica at 5kg heavier?!?!?!!!!!

Presumably they've got the same tranny, so that shouldn't account for a difference.......so what could it be?

1.2 of a second with the same engine/g'box etc .. sounds like Toyota not wanting to upset Celica owners ?

Just thought - could it be aerodynamics??? The Celica is far more curvey than the boxy Corolla.....??

My stock Corolla was timed electronically at Trax a couple of years ago doing 7.26 seconds 0-60. I think with a bit of practice somewhere near 7sec would be doable.

The problem with the 0-62 time is that you need to change at 61mph to third gear. However, it doesn't take over a second to switch gears, and doesn't the Celica have the same box and hence the same problem? Unless the Toyota engineers have sneakily added an extra tooth to 2nd to get it over 62mph.

I guess on the 0.25 mile, though, the Celica's better aero package would help as you got towards 80-90mph.

I think the Corolla will have different ratios to the celica gearbox. Which would explain the 0-62 difference.

Hi,

Celica and Corolla share the same ECU,same gearbox ,same final report 4.55:1 BUT Corolla has a better

aerodinamics coeffi:0.29 against 0.31 for Celica. In the same time Corolla is havier from 15kg to 30/40kg depends on the version of it(three or five doors).

The staded 8.4 sec for 0-62mph(100km/h) is o joke! Auto magazines cloked it at 7.2s-7.5s for 0-62mph(100km/h) in the normal conditions.

Mine NEVER did ,when it was STOCK, over 7.3s over 0-60mph(96.57km/h)!!!!!!!

Now the 0-60mph(96.57km/h) is slighty the same BUT I got huge improvment in performance throw gear accelerations and for 400m.

For instance the best results for both version:

Corolla stock: Corolla tuned

0-60mph(96.57km/h) 6.8s 6.65s

60km/h-90km/h

4th 4.5s 5.2s

5th 6s 7.5s

6th 7.s 8.7s

80km/h-120km/h

4th 6.2s 7s

5th 8.1s 9.7s

6th

9.65s 11.7s

90km/h-120km/h

4th 4.9s 5.8s

5th 6.4s 8.1s

6th 7.4 9.5s

0-400 mile (402meter) 15.2s 15.6s

Mircea

I think people underestimate the aerodynamics on the Corolla, they do have wind tunnels after all at Toyota :D

However, the total drag on the car is of course the drag coefficient times the frontal area. The Celica presents a smaller area to the wind which is why it has less drag, even though as a shape it may not be as aerodynamic.

The staded 8.4 sec for 0-62mph(100km/h) is o joke!

It's not a joke, it's a handy trick to stop us paying more insurance :D

0-400 mile (402meter) 15.2s 15.6s

Are you sure about those .25 mile times, Mircea? I believe even stock the CTS will break 15sec given a reasonable track.

Hi Paul,

Absolute sure! But is important to mention that I falled the changes from 2nd to 3rd !!!!!!

The 400 miles' result was done in the late of Nov!!!!!!In spring I hope around 14.8 or so!

You should be aware that the shorter gear box helps more in the acceleration throw the gear than for the standing start!

For instance with stock gear you can touch 0-100km/h in the 2nd but with mine I have to change in 3rd!

The car's behaviour and its handling is complet diff. now!

Mircea

I think you'll struggle to get a standard corolla T-Sport to do a sub 15secs quarter

struggle but not impoosible :D

got to catch lift 1st-2nd, and 0-60 should fall into the 6 something seconds area and the quarter could be under 15 seconds, not easy though.

I think the roofline of the celica is a few inches less than the corolla, so as paulT says although the drag coefficient is lower the celica should still be better overall. Corolla's standard come on stilts, and a lot of air passes under the car, which i dont think helps!, i noticed a great increase in top speed after dropping the ride height ~60mm

I am of the opinion that to lower the insurance groups and not overlap the celica to much they quote the figures as being higher.

I have recently test driven both T Sport cars at my local dealer and the young salesman who went with me was happy for me to put my foot down a bit! :)

I could not tell much difference in acceleration between the 2 cars, the Celica felt more secure on the road where the Corolla was bouncing around a bit at speed on the B roads. I would say that with the same engines, same gears and similar weights, they have very similar performance, perhaps the Celica will edge it at top speeds because of its shape, but I never got to test that out!

I also tested a RX8 231 BHP model and it was not very fast at all, it was a nice car and handled well for its size (it was bigger than I thought), but the engine was gutless, The salesman never came with me so I redlined through the gears a few times, it beeps for mercy at 9000 rpm! I was so dissapointed, I do not beleive the official performance figures for this car, I would put money on a T Sport in a 1/4 mile race against one!

The other car I tested was a Honda S2000 and it was awesome, do not try and keep up with one of those babies, it will just drive away like you are not trying! It was also very well mannered but I did not get to corner it hard as the salesman was more mature and a little nervous and kept saying it was icy to slow me down! I got to drive a good 15 miles in it though and will strongly consider one as my next car if one will fit in my garage?

For Zuban,

Ask your dealer a new version of the GEAR SELECTOR CABLE wich is stronger & shorther than the 2001-2004 version!!!!

You will stay in lift for 1-2 as well!!!!

The reason we know the CTS can do <15sec. was because Nick_Johnson did that at the pod

I snuck in just over, but that was because the start was drenched to stop the poor 4x4 weenies breaking their transmissions.

Im sure most CTS Owners will tell you that the quoted time is not a reality, having owned a 04 CTS I know it is quicker, unfortuantely though my scientific measurement entailed watch and speedo but I got 7.2.

They use same engine gearbox ecu there is no diff in set up between the 2.

As said I think the main reason is due to price diff between the 2, Prospective buyers might be put of the celica if the corolla had same times for a lot less.

Just my thoughts I think both cars are exceptional and would love a celica Tsport but family ect

Is a T sport the same as my GT?

The GT version does have the same engine and setup of a T-Sport. Just think of the GT as a T-Sport but with a different bodykit and interior trim. Mechanically they are identical.
