Cold Starting Problems.

I just wondered if anyone has had similar problems to me. Occasionally on cold/damp mornings my 1998 1.8 Avensis does'nt start , but spins over sounding as if it has no compression. Eventually it starts, but is flooded up and runs rough for a few seconds. After that it is perfectly ok again. This problem first happened about 6 months ago, but until recently had'nt happened since. The car has the 7AFE engine, which has done 70,000 miles. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. :thumbsup:

It sounds as if your plug leads need renewing.

70,000 miles is quite good for a set of leads.

Hope this works. :yes:

Thanks for your post sooty, but I don't think its an electrical problem. It only did it the once, the other day.

Have you checked the plugs are torque loaded correctly a loose plug loses compression. If that is OK carry out a compression check. My wifes Toyota is serviced by a local mobile mechanic. If you have one of these guys in your area who is reliable he could do a check for you cheaper than a garage.

I once had a similar problem on a Volvo that was caused by dampness on the HT leads and distributor. I used to spray it regularly with damp start.

Funny enough my Avensis has just started to do the same. I found that taking the key out of the ignition, locking the car and then unlocking again using the remote on the key, then trying to start again has allowed the car to start. I have booked in to see Mr T as i still have warranty with it. Only got 56K on the clock :crybaby:

It may sound silly, but make sure your Battery is in peak condition

Just an update on the starting problems.

The Battery is in peak condition.

Mr T plugged the ECU into their diagnostic system and re-programmed it.

He also renewed the batteries in the key fobs. All problems solved touch wood.

It has started first time with just a flick of the switch even in cold and damp weather.

Nice one Mr T at Pinkstones in Stoke-on-Trent.

No cost to me, but they have found a faulty O2 sensor and booked into replace free of charge.

:yes::thumbsup::yes::thumbsup: :D :D
