is the rev limiter set to 7000rpm ?

mine kicked in at 7000 in 3rd and 4th gear today.

my thoughts were it was set a bit low considering you get an extra kick at 6000. and the clock doesn't actually red-line until 9000rpm

If you try to thrash the engine before it is properly warm there is a rev limit of 7000rpm. Give it a few more minutes gentle running and it will go up to around 8300 or so.

ah ok.. that makes sense!

I thought you couldn't even get into 'lift' when the engine wasn't warmed up properly?

But yep - redline is as near as damn it - 8,300rpm

You cant. I believe like the VTEC's there is an oil temp switch which allows lift when the temp's up.

So how did Chenks manage to get to 7,000rpm and get limited there then?

mine limited at 7000 because i had only been driving for a few minutes so i assume the engine wasn't warm enough

Isn't it bad for the engine when you slam the car while the engine temp is not warmed up yet?

yeah, when i bought mine the sales bloke at toyota stressed to me never rev the engine high until its warm.. it only takes a couple of mile to warm up so i always wait. At 7am it takes me a couple of miles to wake up too so not a bad thing...:lol:

Yeah, you dont want to be hitting the 'lift' when your half asleep! :D

But I thought, as was mentioned above, that you couldn't even get into lift at all until it was completely warmed up??? That means you should've hit a limit at 6,200rpm.........

well i defintely got a kick at 6000.. and then limited at 7000

its just not worth trying, you will kill the engine... ;)

warm your engine before you do the bank job.....

Absolutely.

It's just not worth thrashing your car (any car!) before it's warmed up.

There's also a school of thought that says you shouldn't even be thrashing it just because the temp guage is up to normal (that's just the water that's warm, not the oil) and give it a few more minutes.

Not scientific I know, but I wouldn't dream if pushing my motor hard for at least 15 minutes from cold.

When it is warm of course, drive it like you stole it :)

The switch to the higher cams is electronically controlled. Just because you rev over 6200 doesn't mean the high cam has to engage. I can't remember what happened last time I revved the engine from cold, as I only did it once, but if the ecu decides it's too cold for the big cam it could still go to 7000 on the small cams.

Some people have turned off the bigger cam altogether in order to fit a turbo running all the way up to 8300 on the smaller cams.

Ahhh - all makes sense now......thanks PaulT!!

the kompressor has its own rev limter, because it lifts at about 3.5/4krpm the !Removed! wheels spin too much causing you to remove foot from pedal in this weather.

i just took it in for service on the traction control bulb, the !Removed! thing went.

PaulT, ur right, up to 7k on the small cams. I did this by accident recently (car had been parked for an hour when i jumped in and thrashed it off assuming it would still be warm enough  )

The lift works when your engine has 60 degrees celsius or more and you have 6200rpm or more. The higher oilpressure does make the vents open more. You can have 6200rpm or more with a cold engine but you dont get any lift because the oilpressure is too low. (Not sure on this one but I really dont want to try)

Thats what I learned when I read about the 2ZZ-GE engine one day.

Not entirely OT - but is there an ECU remap or anything available to change the point at which the lift kicks in.

I seem to remember reading something on a Celica forum about it - but whether it was speculative i'm not entirely sure?

Hey Rinko just pm'd you back.

Anyway yeah you can change rev limit and lift point. But there is very little information out there about it. I've done most of my reading up about it in the aussie forums. Check the Sportivo section (aussie version of the CTS) Many go on about the dastek chip and some about the Apexi Power FC.

As far as i know though some people are having compatibilty problems. The Apexi Power FC will aparently fit but your gonna have to make it fit as its designed to fit the celica wiring loom rather than the corolla. Don't ask me what the difference is there the same bleaming engine. But aparently theres a difference!

Anyway heres an idea of what your looking at Power FC

Yeah - thanks for that mate!

TBH i'm not that much up on these VTEC/VVTLI engines, so I wasn't sure. Seen the Apexi systems mentioned before but wasn't entirely sure what they gave you. There we are then!

It's a real shame that there aren't more off the shelf parts for the corolla - seems that even though they share the same engine, the differences with the celica mean it's not possible to use alot of the toys.
