Reverse Gear - Accidental Selection

My Toyota is the first car that I have driven that doesn't appear to have some mechanism to prevent accidental selection of reverse year. On all other cars that I have driven, it has been necessary to either pull up or press down the gear stick before selecting reverse. This seems quite a sensible idea to me as presumably the engine could be severley damaged if reverse was selected whilst travelling forwards. Does anyone know why Toyota don't have such a mechanism and whether damage would be caused by accidental selection of reverse.

This isn't something that I've done, but just curious about.

I know exactly what you mean. The gear stick is also further away from me than it was in my previous cars, meaning I have selected fifth instead of third, third instead of first, etc. Not too bad as it is unlikely to damage the engine but it does mean I've looked a t**t at the lights a couple of times when I tried to pull away in third! :D

I'm not sure whether you can actually select R with any forward movement. Sometimes I have to clutch twice to select R.

Cheers,

Jim

You cannot select reverse try it when not moving for example 5th then try and engage reverse it wont engage you need to enter neutral then come back across the box to engage reverse. Well thats how my old corolla and mine and my dads avensis work.
