4a-ge 20v Upgrade

I have heard that the ECU of AE111 Levin/Trueno with 4A-GE 20v black top comes with 2 factory upgrade levels. When you buy the car the ECU is being set to level 1, but if you need more power you can visit any authorised Toyota garage to upgrade the ECU to level 2.

Can anybody confirm this?

The information was given to me by the president of Levin/Trueno Club here in Cyprus. I want to clarify this before I visit Toyota Authorised Garage.

Anybody can clarify? :help:

AE111/AE101 ECU's are ****! level 1 or 2 i bet they are both crap cos they are setup to operate for optimum mpg and low emmisions which means BAD for power! 145-150bhp is max u will get from a std ae11 on open throttle with std ecu. junk the ecu and get an omex etc and u can get up to 180bhp.

VVT is junk also but as an engine goes the 20v is agreat bang for buck motor. Great in a AE86.

Ian.

std ECU is 163bhp or 165ps. Mine is a second hand import from Japan which maybe got different specs than UK specs.

All AE101/111 20v's are Jap. they were not available to the UK market and if they were they wud probably be more powerful than the !Removed! cos of the strict jap laws etc....so it doesnt matter where on earth u have a 20v 4age...they all come from Jpn!

Std ECU is 163bhp!! id love to see that! as i said, we have a std AE111 Blacktop running on open throttle bodies on a rolling road with a 4 branch manifold, full system with no cat, no power steering and no air con connected and the engine gave 153bhp. that was with 95 octane fuel and normal conditions.

If you are going by toyota's "proven" figures then u need to know that Toyota Dyno the engines in japan with 98 octane fuel, no ancillaries hooked up at all so the ENGINE is really under no loading at all....hence the glorified figures! :o

Poxy i know but what can ya do...the std ECU is absolutely terible and VVT is so crap too....peopel that think its ome kind of VTEC are really silly since there is actually no valve lift alteration, just timing for guess what, economy and emmisions at certain rev's and a little better torque while driving?? as for the new VVTL-i engine thats a different kettle of fish. Great engine and VTEC like design etc only hampered again by crap ECU settings for economy and emmisons. Superb engine when freed up and ran standlone ecu!

get a OMEX ECU onto a std AE101/AE111 20v Engine alone with no mods and you will see a huge HUGE difference in power cos the actual engine is pretty good in design and flow etc. held back by 21st century laws and emmisons control ect... :censor:

bit off topic but would my ae82 with a 4age 16v engine be any better off bhp wise with a OMEX ECU? engine is standard at the mo with a air filter and very free flow zorst

Yeah the Toyota claimed power figures for the 20v 4AGE are a touch... optimistic perhaps :)

I'd be interested in what you have to do to get near 180bhp out of one though, I've currently got an Omex 600 ECU, 4-1 tubular exhaust header (4-2-1 won't fit), the standard throttle bodies and injectors and stock internals. Engine isn't even close to running yet (a cooling system might be a good idea first), but I wasn't expecting much over 150bhp. Car doesn't have a cat, power steering, air con or any of that kinda stuff.

I bought my Omex setup with my engine from RAW, so I don't know how much it costs separately I'm afraid... Not going to be cheap though ;)

Hi, posting from South Africa in JHB, would like to know about one or two things you have mentioned.

You mentioned that a std BT with throttle bodies and no cat, aircon and power steering gave 153bhp. I am running a 4age 20V BT engine (stock) with an output of 156bph atw. R u talkin about atf or at the wheels? I know that the Airpressure is abviously way diffirent from yours, but I'd just like to know.

Secondly, u mentioned an OMEX ECU that wud push the power up by quite a bit. In SA we've been told that you cannot remap the system as the Lamda Switch resets everything to default value when switchin the car off and back on :crybaby:

Is this OMEX ECU locally available in the UK, or do you need to import it? If it is sold locally, do u by any chance have the e-mail address of the Shop that sells it? Would like to find out if there is any way of importing it and having it installed. We have diffirent Fuel Management Systems available in SA, but these systems cannot activate the VVT in the 20V motor, and therefor it is a waste to even replace the original.

Thanx :)

Omex is a UK company, I think you can buy direct from them. I got mine from RAW UK, they specialise in kit cars and installing 4AGEs in kit cars. They do an Omex kit containing all the bits you'll need to convert a 20V 4AGE (Silver or Blacktop) to Omex 600 ECU and supply the ECU with a base map for the engine too, no idea if they can ship internationally though. You'll almost certainly need to set it up on a rolling road to get the best out of it though, finding somewhere to set it up might not be easy. I'm not sure you'll get a massive power boost on a stock engine just from changing the ECU either, it'll help a bit and certainly it'll make it possible to run wilder cams etc that the stock ECU can't cope with though.
