Hello, I just have a quick question..

I had overheated my van and now I believe the head gasket to be shot. I want to do the job myself as I have little money to work with. (i have 2k but may just need to buy a new car...)

Can I remove the engine access cover (under the seats, I heard there is a large section that can be removed) and do the job from the inside of the van? Im worried the head bolts will be to long to come out on the angle the engine is on...

Thanks alot!

B) It's a fun job,NOT but yes the head comes of without taking engine out.At least it did on my 96 GX.One of the biggest headaches i had was a socket to take the head bolts out,SNAP ON do one i needed a 14mm BI HEXAGONAL DEEP SOCKET.A conventioal hexagon would not do it on mine.Good set of ramps you will need also.Good Luck.

Imm ummm... van camping ATM... lol half my tools are in hawk also. So... Can you describe the job (ie why I need ramps) overall as my chilton doesnt..... (chilton has really grown to suck.. :( )

Im about to go pull the tools I need out of hawk so I need to be carefull what $ I spend.

I imagine the job as being: Remove seats, carpet and access panel. Remove a couple accessories or lines and clear access to motor. Remove head bolts and hope they dont run into the walls as the come out.

Van camping??? lol you live in a caravan?lucky sod wish i did council tax startin to get offensive.

Anyway to the point you will need to get under the car somehow quite a bit, exhaust manifold needs to come undone as does the front offside engine mount. To be honest unless you consider yourself at least fairly competent with the spanners i would'nt go there. That bein said it aint rocket science.I managed it ;-)

The biggest headache i had really was finding the right socket to get head bolts out.Dont waste your time with cheap tools,i got my 14 bi hex from snap on it worked fine was'nt horribly expensive bout £13/14 i think.

Obviously you will need a torque wrench to do it all back up and a good timing light will be handy to.

I got my gasket set of eBay was bout £25/30 delivered.Good luck

Lol... yeah.. lucky :P

So, Im not totally sure what you mean by confident about the spanners or why a mount needs to be undone. I just hope the manifold bolts dont snap :( I hate toyota bolts.

I have plenty of tools although I suspect I'll need a smaller tork wrench. None are cheap but was smart so all were inexpensive. We have a nation-wide store called Canadian Tire and often tools go on sale for 60% off. They also come with a life-time, no questions asked or reciepts needed warrenty!
