Diesel Or Petrol?

Thinking of replacing my existing old style Avensis with the new model. Dealer has offered a new Colour Collection for just £12,995 but I prefer the extras on the Tx-3. Because of the depreciation I always try to buy one year old model rather than new anyway so will probably opt for a used Tx-3 (should cost about the same as the CC although thay seem hard to come by as the market is flooded with Ts-3's).

My question is should I go for the 1.8 VVTi or the 2.0 D-4D? Anybody any preferences? Reliability is important (not that I've had any reliability problems with my last three toyotas).

Would anyone go for the new Colour Collection instead?

My t3x 1.8 is returning 45mpg on a run. Around town 33-37 mpg. The D4-d's we get in for servicing are averaging anything from 47-57mpg. These avensis's are fleet run so do varied driving but cover around 100k in a couple of years or so. To be honest i cannot fault the 1.8 it gives a good turn of speed and decent mpg for the size of car. After driving the 2.0 d4d and 1.8 i find the 1.8 to have better steering response

think thats down to the 1.8 being electric power steering and the d4d hydrolic. On the road the d4d seems a bit quiter and has good low down pulling power. The only thing that made me go for the petrol was the steering feel it felt that little bit more sharper than the d4d. On the whole both cars drove and performed well. To finish i would not go for the colour collection i like all the toys the t3x offers, i was thinking about t4 spec but there aint many about and my budget did not quite strech to t-spirit. Only way to really know is to drive both petrol and diesel which ever you go for its a car in a class of it own in my opinion.

the 2.2 D4-D is the best of the lot

Slimjake - I bought my T3-x 2.0 D4D recently - it's just over a year old and it's amazing - regular 57mpg on motorway runs of 70-75mph and combined motorway and city driving still comes in at around 53mpg..... great to drive, smooth, quiet and lots of low end pulling power. Go for it! :)

So that's a vote for each engine then. Thanks guys!

I have to say that I was presently impressed with the 1.8 VVTi. I thought it would feel more underpowered than the 1.8 on the old Avensis, given the larger, heavier new model but it certainly wasn't - a big improvement all round. I'll hopefully get a test drive in the 2.0 D-4D this week to compare. I think the 2.2 is out of my price range.

I'll let you know how I get on.

I have a diesel T3-X, my first ever diesel, I was very impressed with the diesel engine, totally converted to oil burning by the torque! 2.2 is the way to go, for that extra power at 2.0 only puts out 114BHP. Dont bothe with colour collection, no spec at all to speak of. T3-X has an excellent spec, its the way to go!

I bought my 2004 54 reg 2.0D4D T3X saloon just 4 weeks ago and i have covered 1000 miles in it so far and average is 52mpg. I also looked at 1.8 petrol against 2.0 D4D and chose the diesel, i am very happy with my choice, i would suggest going for the diesel.

i would suggest the petrol version 1.8.it's quiter, more dinamic and cheaper. the 2.0 D4-D has real power to accelerate after 1800rpm,below that rpm acceleration is sluggish :crybaby: and that's really annoying, typical for most of the diesel engines.think the new 2.2D4-D is not like that.

Thats a fair point lexus, until the turbo kicks in about 1800-2000 revs, the engine is very sluggish. But its just a case of modifying your driving style when pulling away, not much of a hardship really.
