190 Vvtl-i

Celica 190

Hi all, :D

New to forum, and soon to be to Toyota ownership since at present I drive a Subaru Impreza X plate T2000 which as good as it is, is becoming too costly to own and run, so trying to compensate for this with another sporty model with slightly better ownership costs without loosing too much of the pace of the scooby. Before embarking on this ride need some help re purchasing.

Is the Toyota celica 190 available in both the VVT-i and the VVTL-i or does it come as standard with the VVTL-i?

Does the exterior badging on the exterior of the vehicle identify that a different engine is fitted? I am aware that under the bonnet there is allready a logo to this effect when the VVTL-i is in place.

I am also correct in summarsing that the VVT-i is timing belt and the VVTL-i is timing chain?

Thanks all for your responses in advance.

Mike.

The 190/T-sport is the VVTL-i. The 140 is the VVT-i. The best way to differentiate the two is the higher red line on the rev counter on the lettering on the rocker cover.

AFAIK both engines are chain driven (the VVT-i definitely is).

Thanx for that info, I ask as everwhere you look they seem to state VVT-i in one sentence then 190 version in the next, a bit contradictory im thinking!

So a 1.8 16v 190 VVTL-i is what im on the lookout for, preferably with both the premium and dynamic packs in thunder grey it is then.

About the Badge on the rear of the vehicle would this also read VVTL-i?

If it's a T-Sport model then it will be the TS logo. If it's the 190 then it will say 190 VVT-I.

And there is the funny thing - Although it is a VVTL-i engine the Badge says 190 VVT-i.................

GO FIGURE...............

Thanx all your input is valued, and I guess you have all been there before trying to make your way around the numerous model and trim variants available!!!!

About the colour though I have seen 190 VVTL-i in thunder grey advertised from both private and trade sellers, so could these perhaps be imports or is there a different dark grey colour that they are getting confused with?

Mr T as I believe you call the dealerships *VERY NEW TO THIS* LOL rung me last night to take my requirements and said they would be in touch when their buyers come along with something, so ownership is coming so ever closer!

Hmmm - can't help you anymore on the colour as I'm flummoxed now!!

But good luck with the search

Just out of interest, what's your budget? And have you got a 190 specifically in mind or would you consider going for the facelift (03 plate onwards) where the VVTLi is only fitted in the T-Sport? Bear in mind that the facelift models gain better suspension setup and better quality trim (rear seats are leather not vinyl!).

Keep us posted! ;)

As for my budget depends really on what I get for me scoobs by either selling it privately or part-x'in through a Toyota dealership. I paid £11k for the scoobs just under a year ago it is well spec'd mica red met, electric oe colour coded sunroof, full cream leather oe upholstery with only 41k on clock, so providing Mr T can do me a good deal with a little bit extra cash a facelifted 03 model may well within reach, will have to wait and see what Mr.T says.

I'll keep you upto speed, something is gonna happen soon though as I'm actually saving £555 per annum on me insurance  by switching to the 190 or £540 switching to the T-sport.

You can only get Thunder Grey on the T-Sport models, not the regular 190.

 I own a 2001 (Y) pre-facelift 190 VVTL-i in Thunder Grey...

edit: and its got leather rear seats...

you CAN get a 190 in Thunder grey.

I think they meant you cant get thunder grey in the regular 140

Also the prefacelift will have leather look rear seats not leather.. unless they been swapped out!

but the AFAIK the suspension setup on the facelift is the SAME!

The facelift will have different rear lights, front bumper and darker interior plastics.

But most importantly will have the better lift bolts.. although they are easy enough (and cheap) to replace on the prefacelift.

Also the GT is in Thunder Gray or Sunset Red. basically its a T-Sport with GT specific seats and hub decals. Also has different alloys and body kit with lowered suspension. From what I gather you can make a t-sport into a GT if you get the bits yourself.

Attached are pics of my GT.

No inside shots yet though.

OH some here http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.p...st&p=637797 But not of mine (cant get lins to work ho hum)

Think you mean Chilli red!

To confirm the colours available along with colour codes incase you need touch up (yes i am sad!):

Celica GT

Thunder Grey (1D2),

Chilli Red (3P0),

Sahara Sun (576),

Storm Blue (210).

Celica T-Sport

Thunder Grey (1D2),

Chilli Red (3P0),

Sahara Sun (576),

Storm Blue (210).

Lagoon Blue (8M6)

Celica, Celica Style & Celica Premium (All 140's)

Astral Black (202),

Chilli Red (3P0),

Crystal Silver (1E7),

Island Green (6R4),

Lagoon Blue (8M6),

You car looks nice the jackal. Although one thing i always thought was missing from the GT was the rear valance that you can get in jap and USA on the TRD action package.... Think it really complements the rear spoiler. I have a one blended into my rear bumper - picture of my rear end (ooh err!):

Hi,

I wondered what the hell a rear valance is when it is at home then saw your picture and guessed its the bit stuck on the bottom of the rear bumper?

Anyhow yes it does make it nice although I'd be worried about bottoming out, when they've taken my car on a transporter the front just touches the ramp and the back is about 1cm clearance!

As for the colours the 2006 GT brochure I got before buying the car lists Thunder Grey and Sahara Sun. I guess it doesn't matter since they don't make them anymore! :(

PS: The Derby Toyota Dealership still had 1 2006 GT left, it was the twin of mine! Should be able to get a good price on it now I expect :)

Yep its the bit stuck on the bottom! It comes stock on the TRD versions (except not blended in).... there is plenty of clearance on it... goes slightly lower than the exhaust. The pic of my car above should be the same hight as yours (the same TTE shock setup)

I saw that GT in the Derby inchap few weeks back looks very nice.. and at a bargain price of 16k (although could get a thunder grey tsport and externally make it look like a GT for a lot less!)

Right gotcha! Looks nice I must say, I do get a lot of comments about people liking the car, side skirts and GT alloys. Glad I bought it instead of a Leon Cupra. (cheaper too!)

16k, well that's depreciating quick, it was 18k in Feb 07, of course never pay sticker price! :P

As for making a T-Sport like a GT for a lot less, yup but do you have the special GT gear knob? hehe

Also I guess you could get a better sound system than the stock one, although the in dash 6-disc changer is kinda nifty. May replace mine with one of these or similar when I've saved up some pennies.

I get people on the phone all the time asking for all sorts of weird colours, I think people see a colour and name it what they want, ice blue, midnight black or whatever it is. Toyota do make thunder grey and the important bit is it's 1D2 colour code, always quote the colour code, it saves a lot of hassle

Kingo

Lol.. actually i must admit i've been after a GT gear knob for quite some time! Except dont want to pay the £45 dealer price for it (and thats with a discounted)

The stereo is rubbish on all the facelift celicas - the prefacelift Sony being a little better!

A guy on celica-club changed the stereo on his GT to a lovely kenwood one here:

£45! ***** on a crutch... I see where making the money is now!

Can't see the link as you need to be a member (*sigh yet another forum username/password to remember!*)

On a side note I found servicing of the Celica actually cheaper than my old Renault Clio, £159, not to bad I thought!

Anyhow don't want to hijack the original thread so I'll shush up now ;)

I Have a black 52 plate T sport VVTL-I That only has a red Tsport logo on the rear no vvti badge Also has T spoet on alloys

Does the colour go a bluish tinge in sunlight? Because that is storm blue.

You can get black 190's imported, however if it came as a Tsport then it has to from the UK/Europe.

Alternatively you may have a 140/ imported 190 and someone has badged it as a TS :o

The TS will come with two tone black grey leather.
