its advisable you get uprated shocks, and just use the 17's, check for rubbing though...but you do know your car is going to be quite a bit slower with them, speedo's gonna be a bit out and the ride isn't going to be as compliant / handling's gonna be worse...

Riko is the ride/handling affected adversely by the lower springs or the 17" wheels? Only ask cause thats in my plans, to lower the car and put alloys on - although I'm only going to go for 15" wheels. How does it affect handling in the wet? A big concern in Scotland :D

wheels mainly, but if you lower the car excessively on stock shocks, or even on uprated long body shocks, what you will do is reduce the damper travel to a very small amount of travel restricted near the bottom of the travel of the shock. what this in turn means is that, hitting a bump, you have a lot less travel in the damper before you hit the bump stop, which will ruin your ride and handling (because hitting the bumpstop the " spring rate " is suddenly increased, causing instability)

and wheels, its all to do with greater unsprung mass. granted bigger, or more specifically, wider wheels permit you to put down a greater contact area onto the road, heavier wheels just dont allow for the same rapidity of movement of the wheel (i.e. the suspension cannot dampen the movements as quick) and hence a worse ride. the worse handling fits in with the gyroscopic effect of a heavier mass (think about riding a bike really fast, its not too easy to turn the front wheel), so it will generally be slower to respond and just duller...not to mention the fact you will have like 1 turn lock to lock before you scrape the arches

I have 16" wheels with pretty wide 225's. In all honesty it was easier to drive with the stock steelies, you can take your hand off the steering wheel on the stock wheels, but with my wide tyres the car sketches about a bit. It does handles better when driven hard though.

im now runing a set of 14s rather than the 15s i did have on. the 15s had big tyres on and i must say the car is so much more fun with the 14s

I must admit when I changed over from the stock 13s to wider 15x7 the steering was a bit scary!

The total circumference remaining the same and the alloys being lighter than the stock steelies does give it a quicker feel when accelerating hard, speedo only goes to 180KMH so don't know if it goes any slower/faster than when stock...

ive dropped mine 40mm on 17's and although yes the ride is stiffer is not uncomfortable and i prefer it to be fair!

I've always stuck with the stock 14" polycast rims, and i find that with the proper set of tires, the handling is more than acceptable. If you were to switch to a new set of rims and tires, I would personally go with 15"s on 195/50/15 rubber.
