Engine Sensors

Forum very busy at the moment - this is good.

In view of some of the recent postings regarding the engine management system, does anyone have the technical knowledge to let the group know which the major engine sensors are, which ones are likely to give the most problems & which are the easiest to replace should the need arise ?

I`m thinking along the lines of MAF, Oxygen sensors etc.

Thank you

you've mentioned the two most likely to fail on these cars!

Others are temperature sensors, speed sensors etc etc.

On petrol you have

Intake system:

- Air flow meter

Throttle Body:

- Idle control valve

- Throttle Position sensor

- Electric version has a single connection that controls the idle speed and throttle position

Engine:

- Water temp sensor

- Knock sensor

- Camshaft Position Sensor

- Crankshaft Position Sensor

- Oil Pressure switch

Exhaust System:

02 Sensor (depends on model as to where they are)

Nor strictly a sensor but there's also the VVT control valve.

Not so familiar with diesel but (as well as most of the above) it has:

Oil level sensor as well as oil pressure

Common rail pressure sensor

Most sensors on petrol aren't too difficult to change in themselves. Problems come due to accessability. Example, Knock sensor is mounted behind the intake so to change it you have to take the intake manifold off just to get to it.

Same comment goes for diesel sensors except for the ones in the common rail system. System pressure is so high it's dangerous to start mucking about with them
