Rev Limiting Problem

Hi everybody, new to this site but really am impressed.

Been searching the web for some answers and so far I can't find anything, so i'm hoping somebody here can help. Mine is a 99 1.6 petrol Avensis, and last March I had to replace the gearbox due to a ball bearing problem. All seemed well other than slight alingment problems with the gear lever but was causing no problems.

Last November though, I came accross a rev limiter problem. It didn't happen all the time but when it did it was frightning. At 4000 RPM in any gear the limiter would kick in and the car would not accelorate, and would nearly throw me through the windscreen. The problem was on and off for a month and then continually happened. Whats more worrying is that the RPM required to limit the engine is slowly decreasing, and yesterday, to my horror, it kicked in at 3100 RPM :ffs:

This really doesn't help, especially when i'm trying to sell the car privatley. Does anybody know what could be causing it?

Many Thanks,

S.C.

Any ECU error codes? Take it's a manual?

Who replaced the 'box?

Does it feel like an eletric limiter, or something physical stopping it?

Unsure about Error codes ie. where to find them, but nothing displayed on the dash.

Yes it is a manual and it was replaced by Mr Gearbox in Ireland, not a new box though, didn't have the cash at the time

As for the feeling it's hard to say, the car feels for a brief second as if it's slammed on the brakes, and if it happens at speed your physically thrown forward

:help:

No worries, just trying to get a feel if it is an ECU problem (should have thrown a light on the dash) or possible a g'box issue (internal *something* jamming).

gear box is what i'm fearing, somebody told me to get it to a toyota garage and get it hooked up for a diagnostic. Just don't want to have to go through the pain of replacing the gear box again, especially if I want to sell it for very little :crybaby:

Is there any way of checking the ECU or resetting it to see if it makes a difference.
