If the Engine Management light does come on, is it still okay to drive the car home until you get chance to check for the cause or taker to a garage ?

Does the car go into some sort of fallback/safety mode (less power etc.) until the proiblem is sorted out & the sensor is reset ?

Depends on what the issue is .. usually, yes. But get it checked ASAP.

That light is a bit generic .. I've had it when a sensor has packed in, and when a fundamental part of the engine blew off. One was fine and went into "limp home" mode, the other cut the engine on the main straight at Nurburgring.

On the New Toyotas you should have an OBD II port somewhere. You can jump two pins and it should flash the Engine light at you and you count the number of flashes and it tells you the problem.

I don't have a new Toyota, and I couldn't tell you the location, or which pins to short, or what the flashed will mean. BUT it should work.
