Hi All

As you can see i am new to the forum so please bear with me .

I have just taken my Celica for a 50k toyota service out of warranty and they have informed me on a visual report that the Altinator belt is making a noise and replace it would cost £203

My question is just because it is making a noise does it need to be replaced it only whistles slighty

Can you help

Dav

Hi. Welcome to TOC  The alternator belt problem is quite a common one apparently. I think you`ll find a few threads about it here. I do believe the solution is to use a silicon spray on it. Not sure where i saw it but it`s here somewhere.

** edit ** Found it Squeeling belt

Hi there - welcome to TOC!

I'm afraid the alternator belt tensioner is prone to failing - mine has already been replaced twice on a 54 plate T-Sport and looking at having it replaced again tomorrow at its 20k service!

You could try the squeeling belt solution suggested in the thread Daktari found - otherwise I'm afraid it'll have to be a replacement. :(

If you are going to spend £203 with Mr T you might want to consider a Gold membership first ;)

If they are just quoting to replace the belt, then £203 is an obscene price. :o Or does that price include the tensioner pully.

Don't put anything on the belt itself. If the squealing is the belt slipping then I guess the tensioner must have failed (or maybe just the belt has perished). If it's more like a whining or whistling sound, then it's likely to be the idler/tensioner pulley bearing. These need lubricating fairly regularly. A good dealership/technician will lubricate it, a dodgy one will sell you a new tensioner pulley.
