My 3.0 1 KZ Hi Ace Super Custom is burning too much fuel, is it normaly like that? If not how can I reduce the fuel consumption?

My Hilux Surf is a 3.0 TDI auto, it does around 18 mpg around town and about 22 on a run. I think these 3.0 litre imports are pretty thirsty but so are the UK motors around this size. Auto's are worse.

I was advised to replace the air filter in mine which made a difference of 2 mpg. I don't think there is a lot you can do really.

We have just bought a Hiace super custom and were really interested in the fuel consumption figures. We looked at a lot of them as there are loads here in New Zealand - All Jap imports, all Automatics.

From discussions with the owners it seemed that the 3.0D tubo EFI did about 20 MPG, the one that weeventually bought is a 1993 2.4 D turbo EFI Auto - the owner reckoned in town its about 24MPG , on a run and careful driving its 30MPG - we will see, I don't think that they should use oil though.

I wondered what the costs were there? ours cost $5000 = 2000 GBP, diesel is $1.05/litre = 0.48GBP.

Please let me know your MPG figures,
