Hi Guys n Gals, newbie to this forum. Have a facelift Soop TT6 but want a GT4 (ST205) to use as a daily drive. Is there anything that is know weaknesses on them or something to look out for? I have a 40,000 mile on in my sight, unmodded and will be looking at it this week. Also, how are the chargecoolers supplied with cool water or if someone know where I can find info on a charge cooler on the web that would be great.

Cheers, Keith

all i can say is listen for knocks from the front suspension - £ 350 - £500 to fix depending this is per side

let go of the steering wheel , if it pulls to the right or left - walk away its been involved in a crash more than likely .

watch for smoke from its rear of any colour - check oil filler cap for cream , ask how often oil was changed - answer should be 3000 miles

give it a good old thrashing to make sure its boosting properly and driving and handling ok .

Good choice mate, not that I'm biased or anything

Superstrut is the main thing to check for, creaking or knocking front the front over pots holes etc are signs it's on the way out. As already mentioned this can be expensive to fix. Normally wears out between 70-100k miles, so should be ok on one that's only done 40k but you need to think about budgetting for it in the future. :crybaby:

Listen out for a knocking noise from the back when going on and off the throttle, which is a sign that the rubber rear diff mount needs replacing. Also make sure the clutch is holding strong and not slipping, usually a sign of a heavy use car on low mileage vehicles.

As for the chargecooler the fluid is held in the whole system, the big black box on top of the engine is effectively an inside out radiator taking heat from the intake track and transfering it to the coolant in the system, this is pumped down to a radiator in the front bumper which cools the coolant and around it goes, again and again....

As suggested about give ST205.net and gt4oc.net a good look over, and also www.gtfours.co.uk and www.gt4dc.com.

Other than that normal turbo check which owning a Sup TT i'm sure you know about.

Now go get one and join the joyful club of cars with super grip:D

Good point re the rear diff mount - although mine is an ST185, the diff mount costs bout £150 plus fitting.

Also, look out for a noisy intercooler waterpump. Its electric, and throttle activated, so if the cars has been idling for a few mins, blip the accelerator and listen. You should hear it quietly kick in, and then it will stop again in about 30 secs. If its noisy, it may be on the way out, and it'll cost you bout £250 plus fitting. I've had to replace it on my current ST185, and the one before that.

They're great motors aren't they - I'm toying with trading my ST185 CS for an ST205 ? !

Also forgot to mention take a good look at the top end tank on the radiator the standard toyota rads have plastic end tanks which degrade over time, and get stress fractures. Have a good look over it for any cracks or white patches which are the starting of the stress fractures. Take another look once the cars been warmed up for any seeping from any hairline cracks. If it's leaking it'll need a new radiator..

what condition and mileage is your CS?

Excellent condition and 67k genuine miles FTSH (its the second car). Small bit of surface rust on inside edge of one rear wheelarch, apart from that virtually unmarked !
