Cts - Tuning Advice

Hello all, I am the proud new owner of an 02 CTS, only had the car since friday but very pleased, although one problem...

When changing up I always seem to drop out of the lift zone (by around 500-750RPM) Is it possible to get an ECU remap to change this? Can the cam change over be dropped to say 5500RM? Or is there an effective and cheap way to push the torque up in the breathless mid range?

Also how often to you guys nail your CTS's? Its great fun but feels like Im gonna damage the car!

btw.. anyone have any experience with these electronic superchargers? basically just a lightwieght fan built into an induction kit that draws from your Battery, seems to good to be true, they claim 15% (25BHP?)increase for very little money! As someone who buys a cotton panel filter over induction kits anyway this seems to good to be true!

Thanks for all your help!

Hi & welcome to TOC!

Can't speak about performance increases - somebody else will be here in a mo to help you out there.

As far as using 'lift' is concerned - providing you keep the oil topped up (use a good quality oil) and make sure the car's well warmed up.....say 15-20mins gentle driving, before revving it - it shouldn't damage the car at all.

Enjoy the car!

With practice you can make all the changes without dropping out of the high cam zone, but it is also possible to extend the rev range down a bit (5700rpm or so) and up a bit to 9000rpm. Not sure exactly what kit could do this, but try the Celica forum.

Normally find an excuse every trip :D

Paul.

Thanks for your help, I guess a B&M short shifter kit is the best idea then, try and decrease the time spent physically changing the gear

Otherwise, I guess I'll have to look into the ECU remap, If I get any decent info i'll post on here.. :)

With practice you can lift in each gear, I used to find it quite difficult, but it's even possible up hill. You just have to make sure you get the revs down before releasing the clutch.

I nail my CTS at least once every journey, but only once i've been driving for at least 10 minutes, so it's nice and warm. There's no reason why it should damage the engine this way and it won't let you red line it if it's not warm. Also, they wouldn't have the lift there if it wasn't meant to be used, so use it.

The Exige 240R gets 243BHP and 170ft/ib from the 2ZZ-GE using an M62 Roots type Eaton Supercharger, I think this is the same charger used in the BMW Mini?? small charger which could probably be used to give low boost with no change to the enigne internals? Also they remap the 2ZZ ECU to account for the charger, so possible a Exige 240R map could be used?

The Lotus map changes the cams over at 4500rpm!

I've never heard of any ecu remaps, or piggy back ecu's out there that can change the lift engagement point. You'll need something like an apexi power fc. Also you would need to find a good tuner to set it up, you can make power by dropping the engagement point down to say 5500rpm despite what people say otherwise, but it requires a knowlogeble tuner.

Elise uses a tottally different ecu, its lotus's own unit.

Tuning for NA would be, have the stock exhaust manifold ported, hiflow cat and backbox. Induction kit, or panel filter if you desire, then a power fc, with remap, will see you in the region of 210bhp, but with a considerable hike in midrange power, and a far smoother power band.

forced induction look at c2power turbo kits, there for celica, but should fit, or require little modding. Or check out the blitz supercharger kit, its about £3.5k

Before all that, i'd ditch the stock suspension for some decent springs/struts or coilovers, and fit an lsd, the lsd from the current mr2 will fit, but is hard to find.

If your just looking for something cheap to boost midrange, then you really need to ditch the stock intake, the low end really opened up on mine after fitting an induction kit, and also port the exhaust manifold, and fit a highflow cat, this should improve midrange nicely.

Thanks for all the info Zuban, I guess you mean the LSD from the most recent MR2 and not the SW20, so this will probably be hard to find and expensive? any idea where I can get one from? what about 3rd party lsd's, how much would one of these be likely to cost?

They add 1psi at idle .. at anything over idle it's just a massive blockage in your intake.

It's a gimmic .. "too good to be true", sounds about right. But post me £15 and I'll send you a 20bhp resistor.

oh, and a cheap V-AFC (or similar) will allow the VVTi earlier, but I don't know about "lift" ..

Yeah, I havent done it but i looked into it, and it would seem if you can find one, its a good option, prices vary, sometimes bargains appear but not often, alternatives would be a quaiffe or trd, all three are torsion type, kaaz do a diff aswell, it is rebuildable clutch type. Just look for a diff for the current celica or mr2 (not sw20).

Try looking at the yahoo japan auctions, theres loads on there, also check the american celica forums for examples of those who have had them installed.

I'm pretty sure someone on this forum said they had an lsd in there cts, maybe they could say what they used?

V-AFC ? I've not heard of that before? I guess this mean Variable something? Air Flow?

get it lowered, 17" rims, k&n induction kit and plenty off optimax petrol and thrape the nuts out of it... thats my opinion anyway... easy keep it in the lift zone , and it roars....
