I have just registered. In its reply e-mail, it says, "...Pipeline has only been going for a month but we have already secured agreement in principle from a major retailer to offer fuel discounts of between 5p and 10p a litre. We have also had great support from the media, particularly from the car forums, Times Online, and from Martin Lewis, the money saving expert. If you haven't already done so, please check out the Media Page on the website. Membership has been growing at an astonishing 10,000 members per week so we are well on our way to launching the Pipeline Card in the spring of 2006...."

This has been in the media recently, sign up for free and find the cheapest petrol in your area.

Reading the papers it is bringing the prices down due to the competition.

All the better for us!

I have second thought.

1) It's reply to my registration stated that it had been active for a month, and yet you are telling me someone actually posted this a few months ago.

2) On its registration application, it asks for full name, address, e-mail address, and mobile phone number. What use, I'm puzzled, is the phone number for?

3) There is no real contact address of this organiser: it is not available anywhere. Why this secrecy?

4) Why has there not been a more public awareness of this organisation? After all, it is a brilliant idea to the benefit of motorists everywhere. There has been no write-up in the regular, mainstream broadsheet newspapers. Why? Do the newspapers know the real background of this ploy, but for want of evidence they would not put that in print?

Could this be a scam enticing people to divulge their active e-mail addresses, which, as is well known, in sufficient number could be sold to unscrupulous merchants for a pretty tidy sum of money for the organiser?

I fear this could be a con trick. I am sorry I posted the original message. You have been warned. Please proceed as you see fit with caution.

Well i've signed up, and at the end of the day the address and phone number are optional details! There's not a lot they can do with just a name and an E-Mail address if it is a scam, which i very much doubt as it has been featured in many media articles and TV programs!

An afterthought though - I guess half the reason its not been so well publicised is that the government aren't exactly going to be happy about people getting 10p per litre off their fuel! You can understand in a way why its been kept "low key" (Even though there are 10k members plus signing up a week, allegedly!) B)

Well I registered on the 7th December and it'd been active for a month previous to that apparently....

I didnt include my address or phone number - and as for emails, I've got three off the guy (Ben Scammell) since I signed up. It all seems cushty to me!

I didn't sign up. The people who advertised this scheme a few months back failed to answer my very specific questions regarding policies and what they do with personal data. They replied with 'thanks' to those who did, so would have read my comments but ignored them.

Cheap petrol maybe (eventually if it ever gets off the ground). But until I'm satisified my questions have been answered - no thanks.

That's kind of why i held back with the personal stuff, I'm not fussed about them having my e-mail address because i get about a gazillion Viagra mails a day anyway... and there are ways around that! I've got a cool (but massive) rule set up to filter that... Anyway that's by the by, i wasn't gonna give them anymore than that, not yet anyway!

The latest update said the cards should be done for March/April time. They also said they have been in the Gaurdain as well as on BBC Radio

I've seen them being advertised quite a bit but I am yet to sign up, I use the petrolprices.com site which has been mentioned here to I think to see where the cheapest petrol is being sold locally instead!

I can't get past the fact that the organiser, or the person who replied to DA is called Ben SCAMmell!!

Maybe i am missing something but what makes them think that they can bulk buy (as do all suppliers) and distribute it any cheaper than for instance Tescos. Confused.

500,000 people saying they will definatly go to one petrol company if you knock a few P off........

500,000 Secured customers.. sounds like a good deal to me.

Not sure where you get 500,000 from, the website states they currently have 90000 registered.

Note- I am not having a dig at you at all just always sceptical about things like this, especially when the site starts by saying that driving is not a luxury but a necessity. (topic for another debate)

It then goes on to explain that Ben Scammell is in the IT industry but is a motoring enthusiast who is a member of a Mitsibushi Lancer Club and races Caterhams. No wonder fuel costs are an issue for him. (necessity or luxury?).

It also states that they/he is fed up of, amongst other things, filling stations making inflated profits from us.

A good friend of mine happens to own a chain of filing stations and i can assure you he is making very little profit from fuel as aren't (grammar!) most service stations including the likes of Tescos, but benefits from the shop sales or store sales and the business brought by people re-fuelling.

There is a big debate to have here about the environment and incentives to reduce pollution from vehicles. The cheaper the fuel the more of us will buy bigger cars, drive more etc etc...

Don't get me wrong I enjoy driving and would have great difficulty getting to work without my car as i work shifts when there is no public transport about, but I only do about 6000miles a year so am not too bothered about shopping around for my fuel or saving a few pence here and there.

Debates are good. (ready for the flaming)

  • 2 weeks later...

This has just been mentioned on the ITV news so could be a real possibility.

It works very well in the Netherlands where alot of garages have signed up.

As Gareth points out. The petrol retailer is NOT making a huge amount on petrol sales. It`s mainly the Govt and the oil producers. Now if someone could organise a grounswell of public opinion & protest aimed at the govt and the producers to reduce prices (taxes), that would be worthwhile. Although again as quite rightly pointed out previously, that could lead to us becoming fuel addicted like the yanks.
