New Tyre Costs

need to replace my front tyres, still have original 14" alloys. size 205/66R 14 V is what the handbook says, had a qoute from a garage saying the only suppliers of this size are Bridgestone, dunlop and firestone, costing £110, £165 and £87 each respectively. about 20% of what my car is probably worth... :(

are there any other options/tyre sizes that are compatable and cheaper? I'm thinking about getting a new car in 6 months time and therefore don't want to throw away alot of dosh before hand...

Cheers

You can get them for about 30 quid each from Here.

thanks daktari, have emailed them for a quote.

does the V rating matter that much? i,e, can I go for a h rating instead, as I won't be doing over 130mph anyway? I've heard that it may affect your insurance if the rating is not correct, anyone know anything about it?

I`m pretty sure it works in reverse with insurance. If you put H rated tyres on a ferrari (Extreme example) then have an accident attributable to the tyre then they can refuse to pay. :crybaby: But just because you`ve got an uprated tyre fitted it shouldn`t affect insurance. AFAIK It`s not a performance enhancing modification.

I'd go with the recommendation in the handbook - at the end of the day that bit of rubber does a lot for you and for the sake of a few quid it's not worth taking risks. I'd never go for cheapo tyres now.

Having said that I wouldn't have thought there was anything the insurance company could do as long as your tyres were rated for 70mph+ as the claim would be invalid if you were going faster than 70mph anyway

You are in Reading? Give "Bracknell tyre and battery" a call (number on yell.com). Only 1 junction down the A329 ..

got my 190/65/14's from a website called camskill.co.uk

they also do Japanese parts ( std and performance )

You mean 195? That's what I would recommend TBH. It's a much more common size (=cheaper tyres), and I would rather have really good 195s than mediocre 205s (plus a few quid in my pocket). I doubt you'd notice the difference between 205 and 195 width.
