New Head Unit - Will It Work?

Hi! Im new here so go easy....

Just need to get some advice / help.

My standard centre console has caput. The screen at the top still works (mpg, clock etc), and the controls for the radio/cd/tape still all work (Bought it with a standard tape unit and a toyota cd unit in the cash tray). The problem is that there's no output from the Speakers. Took it in to Toyota n they said that there's an internal fault in the centre console - not fixable - n a new one would be £700 + VAT! So after a few !*^$'s I told him that wouldnt be happening....

So my question is... If I take out the Toyota tape n cd and put in a new head unit - will it work? (The guy at Toyota had no idea...)

Hope you guys can help!!

OK thanks!

Iv looked through the how to's n gonna go for the facia option instead of the cash box. Looks fairly straightforward to get it out n back in.

Only other question is how is it wire up? Never done one before but if its easy enough ill have a go!

You just need to get a iso converter cable that converts the original toyota connection to iso standard type. These can be bought anywhere like halfrauds.

There's not a lot that can go wrong to be honest, apart from breaking off the wrong legs on the DIN unit (Which i assumed you have ordered aswell... you cannot get this part from toyota, its a third party product!)

Get back to us and let us know how you get on!

Yeah it isnt that hard mate. Does depend on the head unit onthe ease of fitting, as some require extra power. But this aree only the high end units that state 4x60Watt and above.

Hope that helps mate :)

Right, done! Only 2 problems. 1 - Think Toyota have given me the wrong facia? I've got a phase 1 & the facia that theyv give me doesnt really fit well round with the din thingy, n wont let me put the top half of the dash back?? also, the cd player works, but no radio? iv plugged the 2 connectors into the iso adaptor - is there anything else? theres what looks like a mini jack connector that wont plug in anywhere on the head unit?

Any and all help massivly apperciated!!

PS your celica looks sweet mate!

Huston, we may have a fairly hefty problem! Just spoken to Toyota and they didnt know anything about phases, but said that its a facia for a japanese model (presume this is phase1 with french being phase2?).

So now i have what is supposed to be the correct facia and it doesnt seem to all fit back together?

Help!

lo, 1st of all, which toyota dealer you using? bolton or swinton? i found bolton a bit more helpful when it comes to parts, but not great! :ffs: 2nd is your car a sr phase 1? i assume so. im pretty sure the bottom section of the dash is the same on the phase poo, sorry 2. not 100% though.

if you want me to have a look for you drop us a pm.

Andy

I thought they only did the GS in a Phase 1?? Didnt they change to the T2 and T3 etc when they hit Phase 2? I know he had to get the diagrams out when i went to pick my fascia surround up, but once i had chosen which part i wanted it was pretty smooth sailing.

Andy, to be honest i always get good service from the Swinton parts desk, the guy there is a pretty decent bloke, he always warns that its going to cost a fair bit when you order stuff! I didn't even realise that this dude was from our4 neck of the woods until Chris just said!!

Cheers for the pm andy, ill give you a ring!

Right, at the moment this is where were up to -

the head unit - looks like its getting radio signal (the eq thing goes up and down!) but no output. the cds are working fine tho.

The facia and the top dash just dont seem to want to fit together! pretty much got them both on, but they just wont seat right! :ffs:

I know it sounds daft, but have you tried using a bit more force on the bottom bit?? They can be a bit stiff from experience, sometimes you have to swing off it to get it to come off!!

Also, try loosening the DIN unit, wiggle it a bit and if that fails, take it out all together and just try and fit the surround to see which part is causing the agro!!

Is your Aerial plugged in properly?

The main problem with it fitting is where the top of the facia "meets" the top part, or should I say where they dont meet... Tried loosening the DIN, but thats a whole other ball game as it doesnt sit right with the facia anyway (But not affecting the facia fitting with the dash as it doesnt even touch...)

Yeah, i mean it sounds like something is in the way of the fascia surround, stopping it sitting flush, or its the wrong surround alltogether! Hard to say without seeing it, any chance of a piccie? :)

  • 3 weeks later...

How do! Just to let you guys know that i FINALLY managed to get this sorted today!! Even with the normal tape deck facia it wouldnt fit!

The answer?

There are 2 plastic bits that stick out from the backof the 'hole' that the units goes in. These were hitting the back of the ash tray and stopping it goin all the way in!

So if any of you guys have trouble with it just not fitting - have a look, it may be the same problem...

But anyway, thanks for all the help!!
