HI,mine old corolla is almost the same--but is ee80liftback,but with the same 2e engine. I love this car--very nippy and the engine is great :D .What do you mean about there is no soft acceleration of your car?when i push the pedal hard, there is a little moment of thinking from the car and then accelerates fast, but that thinking is because of the carb. and i think it's normal.THAT'S THE MOST RELIABLE CAR I'VE EVER HAD!

Hi, yes is what you allready said! a little moment of thinking from the car, then it goes fast! but this issue causes a loss of power when i ride on that accelerator position, too unconfortable for passengers, that allways feeling a tremble of the engine (the problem of thinking).

One time i went to toyota service and i ask for this issue, and they said that probably is a faulty vacuom pump, or bad ignition time adjust. the second cause should only attibuted if my car has no automatic ignition time set, but it has. so i gess it is the vacuom pump.

Your car have a difficult at startup when it's engine is in normal temperature?

Yes,exactly the same ,mate!when the engine is in normal temp and turn it off, after 15-20minutes when i want to turn it on again it has difficulties to start. But when the engine is cold, it starts emmediately.i see that's common problem of this carbs..about the ignition time adjust,i think mine also has an automatic ign.time set/i'm not sure/  ,but went to toyota service and the mechanic adjust the ignition time at 15-16 degrees, not at 8-10.,and the car accelarates faster and the thinking do not cause loss of power any more.

Wow!

I've been looking for days and i have finally found someone else with the same problem as me!

I have a carb 2e engine - in an 1988 Starlet which i just bought.

I adjusted the timing back to 10 deg as it was pinging going up hills and since then it the engine has been all over the place at part throttle, only accellerating as i back off the loud pedal or push it all the way down!

I have had the same warm starting problem too!

To make matters more interesting the car is a low volume import, so it's was never available in Australia and the Toyota specialists know nothing about it!

I agree with these vehicles being very reliable, the only issue i've had was when the PO put long life coolant in, which promptly destroyed the seals in the water pump : (

Will sort the timing out and report back!

Garth

theyre a workhorse of an engine, but whoever said that theyre nippy....well, theyre just not. they are a very old design. 75 bhp if i'm not mistaken, hardly warrants calling the throttle pedal, "the loud pedal", (unless u have a hole in your exhaust lol)

No,you're not right. The car is nippy, compared to golf 2 1.6/75h.p./ or 1.8/90h.p./,golf3 1.6 ,1.8 or audi 80 1.8/90h.p./,AUDI 80B4 1.9TDI/90h.p./or 2.0/90h.p./ and 2.0E/115h.p./ for example  .The corolla 1.3 12valve is 75h.p.,but accelerates faster than those cars  ,so that's what i mean.I can tell you that that corolla accelerates faster than my uncle's PEUGEOT 406 2.0HDI/110h.p./  .I know that that car is not a sport car,but the engine accelerates very good and i can't believe it's just 1.3 and 75h.p., /and don't forget that the car weight is 880kg/ :P ...That car made me a TOYOTA FAN.:thumbsup: That's why i bought few monts ago the new COROLLA 1.4VVTi/97h.p./ B) ,i don't like the design very much, because it looks like golf5/,but i like the COROLLA reliability and nippy engine, compared to golf5 1.4

.The corolla 1.4 runs like golf 5 1.6/102h.p./ :D Sorry for my bad english. :!Removed!:

actually, i was driving a berlingo 2.0 hdi (same engine as the pug 406 u just reffered to) and it woulf leave my ee90 for dead. i suppose its nippy for what it is, but seeing as my last corolla was a 4age, maybe thats why i consider it slow :D

Oh,don't say this, mate :nono: You feel that the Berlingo is faster because of the better torque at low rpm.,but the diesel motor can't achieve 5000,6000,7000rpm.,so if you keep your corolla at 6000-6500rpm.or even 7000rpm. for example, the berlingo will die. :P Also the tech.specification shows that BERLINGO 2.0HDI accelerates from 0-60mph/0-100km/h./ for 14.8sec. and the COROLLA 1.3 12valve accelerates 0-60mph./0-100km/h./ for 11.7sec.. :D

OK,there are some differencies between ee90 and ee80,maybe  .I don't know the gearboxes are different ,maybe  ,because mine ee80 accelerates faster than 2.0HDI! And very important thing is to adjust the timing at 15 or 18 deg. instead of 5 or 10 degrees :hokus-pokus: .That makes the car faster :driving:

yeah, theres more than likely less weight in the ee80 aswell...im not trying to argue :)

i wont bother trying to tune it though...ill wait to do a swap

Your car have a difficult at startup when it's engine is in normal temperature?

Distributor vacuum advancer units have a tendency to fail (the diaphragm between the sub and main advance capsules splits). This often causes high fuel consumption by allowing fuel to be sucked out of the advancer port of the carburettor through the main advance pod, through the split diaphragm into the sub-advance pod then through the vacuum hose into no.2 cylinder. Also the mechanical advance mechanism has a tendency to seize up, providing no centrifugal advance. Either or both of these events will cause improper ignition timing.

Some very interesting points from Mr Q - i'll be checking further as soon as i can find the time.

Does anyone know where i can find an factory manual for the 2e carb engine, or even the carb on the 2e?

A mechanic i took the car to said it looked like a variable venturi carb (like an SU for any british car lovers out there) is this correct?

I'll have to get some specs on the weight of the Starlet, must be significantly lighter than the weight of a big ol' corolla ... and therefore faster :D

Yes,STARLET is lighter than COROLLA. :D I know that Starlet /1990/ is 780kg..The COROLLA weight i 880kg..

Thanks to mr-g for the interesting information.I see that he has HIACE and i wanna ask him what engine the hiace has and which year is manufactured? It's interesting for me because my dad has HIACE 2.4D and it's 380000km.now. and it's THE MOST RELIABLE BUS i've ever known.Has anyone watched the "top gear show" few years ago when they were trying to destroy an old HILUX 2.4D?Very interesting.Sorry for my bad inglish. :!Removed!:

Hi sir, nice corolla you got there. we never had those models here in the Philippines. Do you have a photo in front view? My Corolla 98 is also using a 2E engine. With the gas price rising up, this engine is ideal. Mine runs 11-12km/L in city driving and 13-15/L in long drives.

For Corolla lovers, I wanna share you this link:

as to the question of the 2E to 4EFE/4EFTE swap, it's pretty straight foward practically a drop in look for and engine out of a front cut so you get everything then after the mechanical stuff, it's off to the auto electrican for wiring
